Actually, after seeing how much they are the mind boggles how you're going to save enough energy to make up for how much it costs!

Lot of power companies over here are offering them for free as a switching incentive.

I had to replace it today with another Nest.

In the box you have the posh Nest bit, a load of screws and manuals and crap, and a little box called a Heatlink. The Heatlink replaces your existing old fashioned thermostat to become the device that switches your boiler. So you disconnect the old thermostat wiring from the boiler, take the Heatlink, and wire that directly to the boiler using whatever system is in place (mine was just a straightforward high voltage on/off system, two wires). It also needs mains voltage, you can take it from the boiler if you like, for now I've got it running into a 13A mains plug until I'm happy with it. Once you've done all that, you run a 12VDC connection from the Heatlink to the back of the Nest. I used the existing thermostat wire to do this as it's already run through the house.

So you tell the Nest what temperature you want, it works out how hot things are and tells the Heatlink to turn the boiler on or off. You don't need the 12VDC wiring between the two, it can work wirelessly, although if you do that you have to plug a microusb cable into the back of the Nest for power.

I had to replace it because one of the wire sockets on the Heatlink wasn't clamping one leg of the 12VDC connection. I took it to bits, it's just one of those random failures on a common component, the screw thread wasn't pulling the clamp into position.

Mine will be mounted on the underlying brick of my hallway wall and surrounded by plaster, so when it's done you'll see a few mm of brick around it, and a nice smooth ring of plaster with a curved edge. That way, it'll be recessed in the wall and only 1/2 an inch or so will stick out.

Careful there - they do need to turn (like a dial). I have stands for mine (I have two).

I've just bought a Nvidia Shield tablet for a tenner off another forum

Killswitch been activated due to the battery recall but its gotta be worth a mess for a tenner (posted).

What Battery recall? I have one purchased from Amazon.com (US) and never received any notification.

Just had my new Sky Hub delivered to replace the creaking old Sagemcom thing I was using - seems much nicer. Much more intuitive interface, WiFi is connecting at 4 times the speed it was this morning, and it has connected to the ADSL at a whopping 5Mbit (3.5 this morning). Shame Sky HD boxes still appear in the attached devices list as "Unknown"....

Now just have to wait for Monday when they switch on Fibre.

It'll be fine, it's only this deep:

When the plastering is done it'll be a ring that doesn't touch the dial. I just need to find a template the right size that the plasterer can use as a guide.

Once its all plastered in, will the fact its surrounded by something not give a true reading of the ambient temperature of the room?

I doubt it but if it does, it'll be a consistent difference and therefore not an issue.

Ahh, true, didn't think of that. Just wondered where its sensors were

Please give us some feedback on that, kinda interested.
Got the machine set up, quite an easy task and took all of 5 minutes. Obviously I need to spend a little time playing with it but my first cup is quite nice, although Mrs JBP| thought it was a bit strong.

The big test will be in the morning, hopefully I'll get up to a fresh pot waiting for me :).

One quite nice touch is that your phone gets an alert when your coffee has brewed.

So far I'm quite pleased with purchase.

After a bit of fiddling about it seems the Android app does not currently have all the features advertised but the iPhone does.
I'm sure the other features will appear on future updates so I guess it's not a massive issue.

I wired the Nest Protect in today, just temporarily (it will be repositioned slightly once the hallway is plastered), but it shows how nice it is. The desktop/Android app interface is very nice too, just like the thermometer.

It's wired from a spur off the upstairs sockets, via a fused switch (to isolate it in case of problems). I may buy another for upstairs. The voice is crystal clear and quite loud without being distorted. The white ring you see to begin with is a night light - it senses you're around and turns on if you want it to, so you can see where you're going. A nice touch. If power is disconnected, batteries kick in. The app warns you that the power is off.

I saw that, it didn't do anything I thought warranted spending the extra.

Posting from my nexus 6p 128g

Also have a NEST thermostat. I use Skylark app on my phone and the wife's so that the heating turns off automatically when we are both out of the house.

I use "coming home" on Android which does the same thing. I wanted to use IFTTT but bizarrely it doesn't let you set away mode!

Bought a 32" version of this. @Bodhi'll be proud at my burgeoning Sony line.

I've not plugged it into an aerial - doing that'd mean I'd be tempted to watch shitty telly. I've simply connected it up to my Wi-Fi and have added the Plex and iPlayer apps. Job jobbed :)

I purchased a Sony 128GB XD (70 Mbps) Card with adapter for my Surface Book, I felt unclean and in need of a good bath after buying it! It was $20 cheaper than the patriot, samsung, lexar.... models though.
