I like, I like that a lot. Let us know how you get on Dys, as I might be picking one of these up at the weekend.

It's fantatsic. Its really very quick. Takes a while to charge around 5 hours but it lasts quite a while.
The keyboard charges quickly though. The keyboard is quite good. Very much like a regular laptop keyboard. i don't use it much as it's easier to use the screen.
Works great for emails and anything else you need to type for a longish time though.

The screen is great. Really very crisp and clear. And very good viewing angles. Very pleased with it.

I used one of the pre installed apps to connect to my Sony TV which worked instantly.

Nice. How have I missed this?

I raise you this pic, however :)

Actually - I think I'm gonna post this in the awesome pictures thread just so I can receive some anti-cyclist hate ;)

Excellent, I think one of these will end up on my desk in the near future - especially good to hear about the keyboard as that is one of the main draws - will mean I don't need my laptop when travelling.

Seems a bit silly not wanting to travel with an Ultrabook, but hey, it's excuse for new shiny!

I bought another LSI 9201-16i HBA:

On its own not particularly nerdy but the awesome part was the price. It's currently retailing for just under £390 (about € 450) and I picked this one up for € 195 from Amazon Warehouse because the box was ever so slightly crushed in one corner. I just switched it out with my existing one to make sure it works and it does! Good times AND happy days.

Ok it is a bit nerdy but I probably wouldn't have mentioned it had it not been for the absolute bargain I got it for. I wasn't even planning to buy one yet but for that price I couldn't not take a punt on it.

Phantom DJI 2 Vision+ with a case and two batteries, and a Canon D60 body, all for £500. Can't complain at that :)

Weather is shit at the moment so I just plan to mess around and learn how it works. Eventually I plan to film about 12 miles of my local canal, for the canal society. Flying is simple enough, I need to understand how it returns home when the signal is lost, how to plot routes, etc. I had it up yesterday in very windy conditions and it handles very nicely. A bit tricky to land when it's really windy, but nothing too taxing for someone who plays computer games. I imagine for anyone who hasn't, it could be quite tricky.

Anyway, here's some crap I shot the other day while learning. It was really windy.

Line of sight, I'd say about half a mile or so? I'm not sure, I haven't tested the return to base thing yet so I'm not going to chance it. Fortunately, the phone app shows you signal strengths and things.

It tilts via the app on the phone, pan is done via the quadcopter. So you need three hands really, which is why I want to figure out the programming so it flies the shot itself.

Well it's got a wide lens so that should be enough to film all your broken bits of bike and your twisted, mangled body in one shot.

Be fair. Two shots.

And from a long way up. With a wide angle lens.

Once you get used to basic flying you will want to change the mode to "Naza" in the software, it gives you a lot more control and lets you use those 2 switches on the top front of the controller.

Watch some of Simon Newton's videos, he is great. This one is relevant to fiddling with the modes:

I crashed it today but was extremely lucky. I was filming over a river, next to a big metal bridge. I got a bit close to the bridge so yanked it back, but forgot I was facing the wrong way. So the drone went straight into the side of the bridge but fortunately the structure is covered in mesh netting, so all that happened was the drone got tangled in the netting and stayed where it was, hanging precariously over a fairly "this kills the drone" type river. I cut power, worked my way through the fencing, grabbed a landing strut and tore a big hole in the mesh so I could pull it through. If that netting hadn't been there, the quadcopter would now be a submarine. Lesson learned.

Oh and while I was filming somewhere else, it threatened to go into "return home" mode due to low battery. I cancelled the message on the phone as I was bringing it back anyway but the software basically said "no, fuck you" and brought it back anyway, trouble is it landed it like it was @TdC on a bike (not all elegant like I land things), fell on its side and chipped the edges of one of the rotors. Of course this is all the drone's fault, nothing to do with me being new to it.

Awesome, but be carful with the plotting routes. I know a Farmer who uses one to check his drainage ditches every morning but (due to a complaint by a neighbour) the police told him if he was not in line of sight it becomes a UAV and illegal. Not sure what can happen though.

Ended up buying this today as my grats on my promotion present. Not everyone's cup of tea but I love the soft but industrial designs Hermes create

It's slightly surprising how easy it is to lose sight of them. At dusk it's piss easy to see it wherever it is, but on a bright day, the moment it gets 300-400 feet away, if you look down at the screen and then back up at the sky, you struggle like hell to see it.

What I'm learning is that you can't just send it up and piss about for 20 minutes - you have to know exactly where you're going with it, what your escape routes are (ie bring it home), but most importantly, you have to think about how you're going to get it back if it decides to crash. That shot of that river might be lovely, but if for some reason it throws a wobbler and lands on the river bank, can you get to it?

I spent the morning getting some nice shots and there were some even nicer ones I wanted, but when I thought about the location I was thinking "right, power lines 300 yards away, I won't hit them but they might interfere with reception so that's a no". Things like that.
