Celebrated getting a bonus at work by spending all of it and more ordering a shiny new Nikon D750. I'm so bad at finances I should be in government :(

Tell me you hate Plex and I will rim you, I don't even care that your anus is all sweaty because of where you live. You could be the anti-cally that I have been looking for.

Yes, I hate plex :) I use a Synology NAS 213 or 214 J (?? from memory) streaming to our living room 55" panel via a Kodi 15.x (beta) App on quad core Android media device. We use the Synology Apps for laptop browser, iPads....

In LA right now, its raining and cool so anus is not that sweaty. ;)

Hasn't arrived yet, my Canon got picked up this morning so once they confirm the trade-in value they will ship the new one probably today or tomorrow.

Can't believe you ditched the canon. You had loads of lenses for that?

No, just the kit lens and the 70-200mm f/4.

I wasn't using it because once you've used a good mirrorless system with compact lenses it just felt huge, heavy and cumbersome. I was taking my mirrorless skiing and hiking due to it's size and weight, the Canon had been gathering dust for years, only being used on the Ryder Cup practice day. I can't remember when I used it before then.

Ah so you moved away from true slr. How does the mirror less work?

Depends on the camera, the NEX-7 I have (and the XT-1) both have electronic viewfinders, so you see what the sensor sees as there is no mirror box in the way. It allows the camera to be substantially smaller and lighter with smaller lenses due to a reduced flange distance. Some mirrorless cameras don't have a viewfinder, so you're looking at the back of it like a traditional pocket camera.

There's a bit on the viewfinder in this:

That lens is huge though, would have to be for an f/1.2

So are there any advantages for the slr or is that in the past now? I know what you mean my Nikon 7000 is huge compared to them. Can they do all the funky ISO, f stop changes that you can with slr?

A lot of photographers still much prefer an optical viewfinder and the autofocus systems. Older mirrorless cameras only had contrast detect autofocus (therefore, slow and no use for moving subjects) but the new ones now have full phase detect (like an SLR) autofocus so on-par with SLRs.

The Dell U3415W and the LG 34UC97 are supposed to suffer from some pretty serious backlight bleed (both use the same LG IPS panel so not surprising) so I've been umming and ahhing all day and gone with the Samsung S34E790C.

It's a 34", 3440x1440, curved VA panel and it looks stunning. It has good response times, it's supposed to be the best of both worlds of IPS and TN. Now to wait for AMD to announce and release the R9-390x so I can actually drive it...

I had a brief look at mirrorless before I ordered my D750 and from what I could gather they still aren't quite as good for wildlife photography (my main interest) but they probably will be soon. Unfortunately fast, uncooperative subjects in dim light tend to be a bit challenging for most cameras :(

Since I'd have to lug around a big lens and an adapter the weight and size savings aren't a big deal for me but the silent shutter would be nice. It's often an animal's first clue that I'm there.

What sort of focal lengths are you using for the wildlife stuff? I would've thought you would be far enough away that a modern shutter actuation wouldn't alarm the subject. And my 50D has a quiet shutter mode so anything more modern is bound to do it too.

Generally I've been using about 300-400mm on crop. It's not a huge problem or anything but animals do wander close enough to hear it and even if they don't vanish instantly once they've had their suspicions raised they tend to be a lot more wary.

Unusual that the mirrorless was louder, they don't have a mirror flapping about so it's just the shutter and are generally fairly quiet (unless it's a Sony A7). I'd stay with a DSLR as well for wildlife, especially in low light.

I've heard some mirrorless cameras deliberately make a noise to emulate the SLR feel, but that could be rumour. My Olly is pretty damn quiet tbh.

Olympus.

They make micro 4/3s mirrorless cameras.
Makes sense now just didn't connect only with Olympus for some reason. I had a bad experience with one of their first digital cameras way back in 1999 or so. Can't bring myself to buy their stuff any more

Wish I could play the guitar. Never had the patience to learn it.
Got a lovely acoustic guitar downstairs. Kept it up for about 4 months and I've not touched it since.

It's not really patience, it's perseverence.

I will pick it up again. But I'll pretty much have to start from scratch and go through the bleedy fingers thing again. Then I'll give up again.

Sometimes I absolutely detest myself :(

I've played on and off since I was 16 (now 36 :/) .. I've been playing a lot recently and I think the absolute golden rule is to play music you love (or just like). I struggled early on playing shite like AC/DC and Greensleeves for the sake of tuition. As soon as I was at a good enough standard to teach myself (with the help of books/CDs/youtube etc) I sacked tuition and never looked back.

My fingers are nicely calloused (thanks @caLLous) now and I stick to shit I love with the odd scale thrown in. A nice mixture of easy tunes (to pick up and strum) and challenging (to progress) is the way forward.

Time to lower the tone.

http://www.ebuyer.com/517760-hp-proliant-gen8-g1610t-microserver-712317-421

Setup as my Plex Media server and local file storage for the misses and i. Running Ubuntu on it, running from my existing external NAS atm till i can procure some 3/4TB drives to fill it with.
How does it handle video transcoding from Plex? I don't use it often but the occasional subtitled movie seems to need transcoding by Plex. It certainly looks a lot nicer than my old microserver.

Well. I had it transcode 1080p on the fly. 60 second buffer, peaked at 120% then settled to about 15-20% for the remainder of the film. Once i save up some pennies, after filling the drive bays, i'll change the cpu out for a xeon and stack some extra ram into it.

It'll get its big test on Monday. When Walking Dead occurs, the following evening it'll get between 5 and 15 streams at once as people watch it, i've stashed a SSD in the ODD slot to serve as a cache/os disk. :)
