for a, uh, recent project I am using the film capabilities of my little camera to do some stuff. it seems to work well enough, it records at VGA and 30fps which seems awesome

I am incensed with fury at the shiteness of movie programmes though :/
my camera records things as a MOV, I need a converter to change it to
an AVI, then I put it into windows movie maker, which ultimately saves
it as a WAV iirc. which is HUGE in size, so I will need to shrink or compress the output.

now I've had a google and a browse on the freeware sites, and up to now I am not impressed. the offered produce either doesn't work at all, only partially works because people want money -or your email -or nekkid pics, or downright has to be paid for, or a plethora of other reasons (like making my virus scanner go off)

So please advise me on the following:
  • decent and free MOV to AVI converter installable on Vista
  • decent and free program that can compress any kind of video (and installs on vista)

cheers in advance!

Not sure on software and such but i know if anyone asks me a question to do with Windows Movie Maker, I send them to Papa John. Might be worth a look.

Quick look. Import Movie Source Files > Video > Mov give a list of converters.

Doesn't the zoo where you are going to swaffle the elephant have security cameras? Those might have better picture quality than your camera :p

if you've got lots of bandwidth, check out Zamzar - email them the files and they send you a nice little link to download the freshly converted files.

also - fuck me, nostalgia.

Job done :)

You will have to fiddle with options to get the best results.

VLC is good at this, but get the latest version.
