Monitor oh monitor, what should I do?

opinions: My monitor, finely tuned and crafted by the well known make of 'Xiod', is a 15" dodgy day machine which to my surprise has lasted my oldeh puter since 1998. Though this article of historic quality and good craftsmanship is something i've wished to cherrish for my ever dying days. I do fear it's gone a bit passed it's specified mileage. This has been bought to my attention from a series of pretty grey and black lines now appearing and complete tone down in the display of different colours

get if fixed or throw out window?

This is my biggest dilema. Keep in mind i'm emotionally attached.

19" should be a minimum. Put your old friend out to pasture.

/me starts shaking

But you don't understand the long relationship me and this monitor have been through. We've kept together through thick and thin. It's acted a secondary radiator, a powerful light, a bird perch for my parroty thing. It's one of the dirtiest monitors to have ever lived, need I say more as on the defence's arguement?

I rest my case.

(I once used a 19" and I must admit gameplay was dramatically increased, but ders gonna be a lot of umming and aring to go on now)

/me searches dabs

/me looks to monitor

i suppose it's time old friend

Ditch it, you know it makes sense.
If you're really that attached to it, keep it for some other purpose. A door-stop perhaps? Or get rid of the innards, cut a hole in the top and stick a nice plant in it.

Or make a space helmet out of it to help spice up those space shooter games.

gawd these are innovative ideas my good people. I will implement these ideas in practice, particularly the space helmet, I feel this could be an excellent aid to the space combat experience.

Wij, you have missed your vocation, go make space helmets!

Honour the memory of the old monitor with a nice shiny new 19" Sony.

Don't strip your old friend of all remaining dignity by forcing it to work on when it's clearly due for a nice gentle retirement.

Would you rather you got to retire and spend a few years reading crap novels and shouting at busdrivers at the age of 65 or be forced to carry on slaving away in a coalmine until you fall over dead?

:)

gawd, Granny, you put it so beautifully. My monitor's memory will live on.

/me purchases gold plated picture frame for Monny Monitor

*sheds tear*

'She' will enjoy 'her' retirement!

/me purchases old wooden rocking chair and initiates pension scheme release.

I never chuck a working monitor away, regardless of their state and specification, as long as they can show a DOS prompt I value them like gold.

Too many times has an old monitor saved me, vital in determining whether your video card or existing monitor is up the creek.

Retire it to the loft and buy a new one, preferably 19", but do not chuck it out until it ceases to display anything.

I will take note of your valiant advice, never put a half healthy monitor down.

Taxan are still selling their 19" Ergovision 975 TCO 95's for £180 (click on the 'Bin Ends' link - don't worry, their ex-review models which haven't been sitting on the shop floor). Myself, WPKenny and a mate at work have all recently bought these. Mine is fantisimo, Kenny had some probs so Taxan replaced and he's now very happy.

Have a look at this informative thread in the Hardware forum for all the persuading you'll ever need.

These are good, solid monitors at a ridiclous price. I never realised what a huge difference a 19" monitor makes until I got one. :D
