It's something I really don't understand. If they are so sure that Corbyn's way is the way ahead, why didn't he create his new extreme lefty party. They could even call it Momentum, and see how they get on. Instead they've destroyed their own party entirely.

We now have at least 9 years of unopposed Tories. I am largely Tory, because I'm a middle class business owner, but I acknowledge the need for a decent opposition to keep things sensible.

Nail on the head, now we could end up with a John Major tory government, and there's no-one to fight against it.

Well he won the leadership election (again) so clearly the party membership disagrees with the "rebel MPs" who are quite welcome to form their own party but wont because they think they can hold onto their cushy seats better as members of the labour party

While some may see him as unelectable it is refreshing to have an opposition that actually opposes what the government is doing

The current party membership (and 'registered supporters' let us not forget) is also quite at odds with traditional Labour voters. It doesn't prove a thing about electability in a general election.

As for the MPs most have been in the Labour party a damn sight longer than the current membership and registered supporters have so it's a bit of a cheek telling them to fuck off and form their own party.

And being in a party whose membership is opposed to their ideals is somehow better? If the demographics/thinking of membership has changed faster than that of the mps perhaps its time for new mps

The Labour party has always been told how to think by its financial backers (Unions) and members (members of unions and other idiotic groups) not its MPs.

This is hardly a surprise or anything new.

Its only even noticeable because of the Blair years where sycophants got selected rather than die hard Labour people.

That worked for them in the past when we had a manual fully unioned workforce, not so much now.

Going forward they have two choices, modernise and bin the unions (and look for different funding) or Corbyn.

I'm honestly not sure what all the fuss is about. A political party exists because of it's members. If they want the party to have certain policies and leader(s) that is who they choose. A lot of the Labour MP's seem to think the primary role of a political party is to get elected. It's not.

The public vote for parties that have policies they believe in. The ones complaining think the party needs to pick a leader & policies that have the highest chance of getting elected. It doesn't even seem to matter if they believe in them or not. That seems like completely backward logic to me. Gotta love modern politicians.

You need an opposition that could actually challenge in an election, without that, you are simply a pub meet for the converted.

Agreed. However, if the opposition is only going to deliver stuff that you don't want, or that the tories do (like New Labour) then what's the point?

The opposition has to be ideologically opposed, or if not ideologically - at least have an alternative. If the alternative is shite, then the in-powers are doing the right thing by the electorate.

It's not set in stone that they have to change every few years...

From some of the hilarious ideas and downright confusion from yesterday I don't think even Labour think they have a hope of winning the election. Even the most socialist of socialists can see that most of it is utter nonsense and would never work.

They still stand no real chance of winning the next election.

2 weeks is along time in politics, let alone 2 years.
Shit happens, unexpected people are left in charge.
