Heres a call thats just come to me, Im a telecomms engineer at a rather large hospital:

she has signed in for "to talk for less" cheap rate outside UK company, they can't connect from their ext. But the comany will not disconnect them. The still continue to activate the account from the 23rd, they are trying to stop it. Every single call is through 01*** 766*77 is being charged in their name - she says it is quite serious and wanted to let us know what has happened. She wants to speak to someone about this as this is cost them over £1000.00 in 3 days. I do not understand what has happened here, but maybe you will. Please bleep her on 201. If heh is in Theatres plesae leave a message and she will get back to you asap

Ok, whats funneh here is, this woman is a surgeon, who put her own number down as 01*** 766*77, which also happens to be the main trunk line into and out of the hospital. So basically, she has signed up to this telecomms company to take on the hospitals entire outgoing calls.

Fair enough, some ppl are taking this way too seriously. Perhaps I should refer more to their common sense rather than their inteligence.

The point is, if you dont know about how to plumb in a washing machine, Pc or phone line, you ask someone who does.

The fact is, this woman seriously beleived she knew better (if you met her you would know that!), despite the fact we have already told her that all her calls are at least 25% cheaper than BT, and of an alternative to BT for international calls, she still went ahead and got this system, but is now copping the whole bill, as we speak we estimate this to be £3000 plus for less than a week.....

Damn you can tell its monday and all the tech heads here are stressed out at having to get up this morning

the problem with the surgeon is the fact that she doesnt know when to get help and doesnt really know where her knowledge is lacking. For a physician it is important to know when you dont know something and so have to ask someone more knowledgable on that.
Off cours this doesnt prove she is a bad surgeon, but it does prove that she atleast has a tendency to take technic for granted(not bothering to find out which number to fill in and check with a technician to see wether signing up for this was smart in the first place). As long as she doesnt make this mistake when it concerns technic she is working with as surgeon there is no real problem, but tbh I think her attitude might also be towards that.

And to stress that point, it isnt bad that she doesnt know enough about this telephone business or technic in general, as long as she understands that she doesnt and listens to the people who were hired to do for that it is fine or that she admits her mistake later(which by whoodoo latest posts seems she didnt do).

I do think she could be a bad surgeon, not for not knowing anything about technic, but for refusing to acknowledge that others know it better. A breathing machine breaksdown or technician says dont use this one, she might be arrogant enough to go against that. That does make her a bad surgeon imo.
Off course going against technicians when it comes to telephones doesnt mean she will do it when it comes to technology in her job.

As I said its important for a physician to know what he does and doesnt know, she obviously didnt bother acknowledging her limits here so it can be assumed she might do it when it comes to her own field.
It isnt the mistake that is the problem, it is the reason why she made the mistake. Basically she should have left things in the hands of people who know what they are doing.
However as I said doing this with a telephone isnt the same when it comes to her job as she will take that more serious, but the idea the arrogance that she knows better than others is still there. Unless she actually acknowledges her mistake, which she most likely will not.
