TBH, I think facebook is so deeply entrenched in society, trying to come up with an alternative at this point just seems a bit pointless.

Personally I wish google would just stick to doing what thay are good at rather than trying to be everything to everyone.

I agree, but they do have Android and its like 70% market share iirc. So they have the chance of hitting phone and notebook users, which is the prime user base of fb.

Yes Facebook is rather well used so this may well fail just as Google Buzz and Wave have.
On the other hand MySpace used to be very popular too until Facebook came along

MySpace was just FortuneCity with more bandwidth, it didn't really do anything new, it just happened to be around as the whole web 2.0 hype ramped up; which is why its also died a death, it added no real value. Facebook on the other hand, did something genuinely new, and the question is, does Google Plus do anything new that's worth having? If not, inertia wins, especially now FB has passed that critical mass point where if you're online at all, you're more likely to be on FB than not (at least in the West).

compuserve and aol also was hot once :)

And I'd argue that it wasn't until that advent of FB that the quality of the social tools available on CS and AOL was actually surpassed. I'm an ex-Compuserve employee (my first online job) and their forums and chat tools looked like shit, but they worked really well. Its just the whole walled garden thing that was the problem (but ironically that's what also made the social tools work so well, there was an audit trail).

The internet didn't exist when you were 14, you must have been about 30. Perv.

It looks like a nice implementation for social networking - but does it have enough features to keep users coming back again and again?

Facebook had a massive win by allowing other developers to create applications inside the site, meaning users had yet another reason to go to Facebook instead of any other site. Over the years they've extended that to applications being able to use Facebook data, and the Facebook "like" buttons or Facebook comments on other sites.

Google could try and implement this across as many of their existing Google services as possible to drive adoption. Everyone keeps going on about social search, if enough people start using Google+ and the +1 button - they could have enough data to improve the quality of search results, as well as customising the search results according to the friends of a user.

Wouldn't mind trying it out if I get a beta - just to see what's happening on the web.

Not too sure about it overall though, unless they start messing with search results due to it, it's not something I'll focus much on.

It looks interesting, but facebook has it all covered. I'd probably use it as a secondry social net though, my FB is so bloated.

I must admit, the whole social networking thing has largely passed me by. I have a Facebook account because I live a long way away from family, but I rarely post a status update! I can't imagine anyone would be particularly interested in what I am watching on TV or if I am going for a curry. The amount of inane nonsense people post is astonishing! I have a cousin who is constantly posting song lyrics for example. Why?

The other big annoyance is people you haven't seen in 20 years trying to befriend you, when neither of you have made any effort to maintain that relationship. People seem to treat it as a competition to see how many vague aquaintances they can cram into their friends lists. I find the whole thing very confusing.

I need to keep abreast of Facebook for work, but I cba with it most of the time; its mainly used as a family photo album. Not a big believer in random hordes of "friends" so I have about 80 or so people on it and that's pretty much it. I've got way more contacts on LinkedIn tbh, and I probably use it more.

After trying Google+ this evening, it seems okay - but it's just a light version of Facebook unless they've got some other reason to get users onto the site.

Google has figured one thing out though - integrating services across the entire platform. Creating a Google+ account adds an additional link on the navigation bar on the top left with your name, and in the top right you see your photo and the number of notifications - so if you're a regular user of other Google services then they've got a way of notifying you of any updates without forcing you to visit the Google+ site every day, or spamming your inbox.

They probably should've waited for more reasons to use Google+ instead of launching it as it is.

I cannot bear it either. My biggest gripe is with Facebraggers that use it as a social climbing tool for their own shameless self promotion like anyone actually gives a flying fuck.

I've had them all; ex work colleagues, ex one-night-stand-stalkers, ex girlfriends, sisters ex boyfriends, ex friends, the utter wankers from high school that I never spoke to at high school, the bullies from high school. List goes on.

My profile is as private as it gets, they're only being nosy fucktards.

I'm culling soon. Bored of just changing privacy settings, I'd rather not have the "associates" there at all.

Yeah Chet, I'm gonna have a clear out soon.

I know that sounds shallow, but I've not spoken with some of my FB contacts since high school and even then it was few and far between.

Google+

Yes, no, maybe?

I am on it, but there is a lot of nothing there at the moment due to a lack of social to go with the networking.

Its another google flop - they should stick to their core business because they continually fail at social networking.

At the moment it seems like Facebook but with a few UI tweaks. And my mum isn't on it.
