Yeah, as I have mentioned before, google really should be focusing on their core business rather than trying to be all things to all people. Lets face it, facebook have this market pretty much sown up. If they are going to do something new, it needs to be an original idea, not some reworking of someone elses.

I'm trying to work out of 'sown up' is right or should it be 'sewn up', you can also use 'sowed up', at first I was sure it was sewn, but then sowed could be right as well.
I could Google this, but I just want to waffle on.

It's hard to say if it will take off or not at this point. It's a tough market to crack, as facebook is extremely dominant at the moment. It can't be ignored though that there are people getting concerned about facebook's privacy issues, and the way they make changes with little to no consultation or announcement. If Google can get it set up right, offering the right kind of features, they might just tempt enough over to start seeing some progress.
Don't forget that if they convince a few people, they might convince some more of their friends and family, who then bring over their friends etc... If they can get a good enough hold, it could easily snowball and become something significant. It could really go either way at this point, depending on how it launches, and what facebook do to counter it. They've already started by partnering with Skype to get video chat in there, to counter the video chat in Google's offering.
Whichever way it goes, it could be the shake-up that the social networking market needs, either to kick facebook into gear, or see some real competition step in and stay.

Google have their own privacy issues though - like when they co-opted everyone who had a gmail account into their last now dead social networking idea and included all the people they mailed
