(cut and paste time)

I've always been against moderators as their basic function is to control, and I've always been proud of the freedom our forums bring.

For me theres more hostility on this forum than I recall in the past. Theres more intolerance and frankly theres so much aggressive behaviour that it makes me wince.

The recent trend of STFU images and the like has been quite amusing, but its only making it worse, as people are now looking for the slightest excuse to publish their latest creation.
I cant say I dont look forward to them, but I'm sometimes appalled at the ease at which some people are flamed to a crisp for saying hi in the wrong place.
A little restraint is called for, and I think someone has to apply that restraint for the good of all users of this forum.
Its difficult for me. To me BarrysWorld has always been something born of the community. Those who dont know our history might be suprised to learn that BarrysWorld was originally the Clan Server side of Tortured Souls and we're very proud of our roots.
We're now owned by a corporate, but they give us considerable freedom, if we look them in the eye and say "yes, this is community, its good". I'm having trouble doing that right now, so I think its time for a little change.

I think Someguy and Damini might be good moderators of this forum, as they're both regulars so understand where you buggers are coming from, but both show understanding and maturity that may well make them good at it.
Just because I've been against moderation, doesnt mean I was right.

I'm open to suggestions, but I think a "hand on the tiller" is called for.

I personally think they [Summo and D] are a good choice. Embattle will do well too imo. If he were around more often I would point out Perplex as well. I would do it, but in all honesty I don't really have all that much time as I used to.

Perhaps a supermod can be drummed into keeping slightly more than a passing eye on this forum as well.

That's my list of conden..err...candidates :)

Sorry, mods have to be very serious and Summo isn't.

For the Dawg

tbh the problem as I see it is that there was no moderation here for so long. Back in the long ago, if somebody posted a HL thread here, they were pointed to the HL forum. After a while those people posting incorrectly grew in number and became more belidgerant (e.g. howdy, wrong forum, fuck off i'll post where i like, etc.).

No mods meant this downward spiral continued into the current state that all courtecy has disappeared, n00bs are seen as a threat rather than an addition, etc.

Please don't make somebody like Summo a mod, as much as I love the guy he won't take it seriously cos he's way too nice, too timid to actually throw stuff into the right forum, etc. (Soz dudeh, but its true :().

The old saying of "spare the rod, spoil the child" has taken its toll already, if we're gonna have somebody, lets not make it someone who's gonna take a featherlight approach to doing anything.

Why do I get the feeling...

I can see this could be unpleasent for the mods. It might seem quite a privilage now, but the mod is going to be judged for every action they take by the other regulars and someone as popular as Summo in the community, could quickly see himself with; 'Summo, delete this thread, ffs, come on!" etc. Which I would hate to see. :/

Fair points, G but I personally think that going from no moderation to heavy-handed moderation is too much of a leap. We all value the freedom and the pub atmosphere we currently enjoy. I think anyone threatening that will be met with this:  Light moderation would prevent the unnecessary flames while not interferring with the general banter and discussions that go on here. It's not difficult to politely move a thread to a more suitable forum.

The debacle of the last couple of days didn't call for mass-banning (which would, no doubt, have made our reputation with that particular bunch a whole lot worse) but the closure of two threads in that instance would have stopped the whole incident (the horror, the horror) a lot sooner.

To address your concerns about me in particular then I can't help noticing the blatant pimping of another GSP in your sig. You wanna see heavy moderating? Do ya? Why don't you come over here, G?

:p

yeah too true bigbb, but it has to be someone who is around and knows the way of the forum - cos u may get someone who is too serious, not knowing say the bodhi trademark line and just deleting the thread.

it ain't gonna be easy for the people to do it, but i reckon summo and D have the open minded view of at least if a thread that they particitate in isn't going their way they won't throw the toys outta of the pram..

*ramble* :)

there is that. I tried to pun it but it is best said out loud really.
imo the ideal mod for this forum would be someone whom none of us knew, and only moderated, nothing else.
sadly such people are rare in the extreme, so we'll have to compromise won't we.

I have always said Embattle should be made Mod here.

He has lots (and I do mean LOTS) of experience of Forums and is mature for a 13 year old. :p

Summo is one very funny guy and would also be on my list.

Failing that - BRING BACK SAS. FFS!

Embattle could be good, he's a regular, yet he's not, in a sense. He sits here and starts interesting debates and posts the odd smiley, but doesn't get heavily involved, unless he's flaming. Perhaps a perfect combination?

I made no mention of heavy, i'm suggesting that you'll be a bit of a nancyboy when it comes to closing or moving threads, whereas somebody like Embattle would just close em. Its not about heavy, its about reacting & *fluffle* don't cut the mustard.

As for my sig, probably the wrong time to go for this, but i've had it with the small comments here & there, its the same _everywhere_ and for everybodies information
  1. I've mentioned it to the dawg before now in an IRC conversation over my access to parts of BW and how that would be affected by my working for a rival. We amicably agreed that i'm not a pleb, therefore everything is rosey, but it is why I don't update my column &/or post news anymore.
  2. Quite frankly sod anybody who don't like it. I'm proud of my job, I was unemployed for over 8 monts so quite frankly don't care what anybody thinks. If the BW lot want it taken out it will be, no arguement, it'd just be done, until then my sig is my sig.[/list=1]Sorry Summo, again not directed at you, but i'm in a "venting" mood.

I've got no problem with GamesDomain personally. Actually, come to think of it, I've not really got a problem with anyone prepared to invest in this industry.

And dont forget to support your local Pants

Never make a regular a Super Mod, isn't that for people that work at Barrysworld?

Emb or Damini would be a good choice for a mod though, yeah.
