Maybe a bit late, but I vote Summo and Embs, both very helpfull and active.

I disagree that a mod has to be serious all the time, they just have to realise when to be serious.

TBH, I like the self-mod feel, although it appears to be rarely used.

Thats all in my n00bie-not-a-very-regular-regular opinion.

I think we're all jumping on the bandwagon here...

After all Ted suggested we take on mods after the recent issues but we've managed prior to that point quite well with out own little 'self moderating' bunch of regulars...

As long as people agree to tone down their behaviour somewhat and get rid of those rather annoying images I think we can go back to 'normality' without making it the responsability of a couple of forum regulars to police us...

I don't honestly think it's fair to give anyone the responsability of modding us - and in general we do a pretty good job of keeping ourselves in line... Two people alone can never police this place 24/7 after all.

As long as peeps know to get the attention of one of a number of 'soopa mods' when it goes pear shaped in the future we can all go about our business as per normal...

Ted? Anyone? watcha think?

Well, I think we need someone to mod, at least in a limited way, to move/close/delete threads when required. The current supermods could do it, but they don't seem to spend enough time here to do that sort of thing.

I was all in favour of self-moderation before, but the place has entered a downward spiral of lame threads, flames and counterflames.

Ch3tan and Xavier both did the right thing and posted up very resonable posts stating that this wasn't on, but all the new people were quite welcome, and it appeared to have no effect on the cycle of crap.

Therefore I think we need a mod. And I don't envy whoever gets the job. As long as they show a soft touch, it'll be fine.

Suite's me, sir! As long as we know where the panic button is, then let's leave it as it is.

After all, ppl will disagree about what should be modded out - however, a troll's a troll & a n00b's a n00b(NOT a newbie!)

Shall we at least try to revert to our previous way of life, before dumping responsability onto 2 or more individuals -and possibly spoil their enjoyment of the forum? Aside from the fact that Damini is busy modding in DAoC and Embattle does a sterling job in the TechNation forums as well as a newsie and columnist is it fair to give them responsability for what is one of the largest forums on BW?

It can get pretty volatile here as we saw yesterday, I for one vote that we all are a little more aware (and restrained) and try and share responsability for these hallowed walls...

Can we have a new forum for flaming spam? Somewhere safe & cozy to welcome the n00bs properly into the fold with mucho obscenity & jpegage - we could call it "The Bodhi Memorial Welcome Lounge"!!!

the other mob, aka Jolt had/have a forum dedicated to spam. I've been there, it's a mad place, but not for the green imo.

Well for a start "dumping" suggests it would be forced upon them. If any of them turned around & said "no f'off" it wouldn't bother me in the slightest, the people mentioned are only the ones I feel are most suitable.

As for returning to our previous way of life, we did that before all this happened..... then it all flared up again, hence the return of this thread from the depths of the archives to which it plunged.

Sorry Xav m8, but I've really gotta disagree, this time is about the 40th time too many that llamas have come along and caused a BW/Anti-BW retaction. With less BW staff about to divert time here (the loss of SAS) and the upcoming changes, we need somebody who is _of BW_ but doesn't work for them too have the ability to keep an eye on this place.

tell Ted then CA. I've changed my mind about it too as I just had an idea:
seeing as several people have offered to help out, why not pool their services and set up a rotating moderator slot that changes, say every two months or so. that way everyone gets their shot, but it won't be permanent [enough to be a possible burden].

Is that a good idea? Would it help? Has the caffeine gone to my head?

we should shortlist (again) and mail that list to Ted with a sort of petition thing enclosed.

Its not bad, but it'd require a member of BW staff editing the moderators every 2 months, which quite frankly is just being a pain in the arse to them.

An easier way of achieving the same result would be for there to be a communal account that has admin power over the general forum (summin traditionally sad like "Trustee" or summin) with no posting rights. BW lot can then give out the passy to those deemed trustworthy & those people can use the power if/when necessary, in theory those trusted would be more restrained because they'd have to logout/login in shared account/mod/logout/login in own account.

I think Ted is talking it over with the other BW chaps atm. He does drop in every so often to talk to us tho. Still, I would like to hear confirmation by everyone mentioned before we emailed off a serious question.

i've seen it attempted and tbh it was a disaster

plus it also is a nightmare to pin down who exactly did what

besides, we're going even deeper into modness now, the idea of creating a mod account almost seems like a way to give us 24/7 - we aren't children here (no matter how some act) - rather than asking for iron bars to be put around us and to get guards partrolling how about we just play fairer?

You're so missing the point dude, its nothing to do with "play fairer" or "be nicer", there are some things that take the piss that need dealing with, threads where its all "hey look at my website on geocities, honest to god its the greatest thing ever although i got a blind man to design it", etc.

We need somebody about to hand out a few slaps to the people that deserve it, nothing more. All the prison metaphores are almost as spin as a labour party speech. And it wasn't about "deeper" it was about _real_ trust.

Get it right, they didn't invade this place, although the original poster of the charity thread fscked up with his approach we provoked the onslaught - I'd attribute the blame 50:50 and I don't think anyone will disagree...

He should have posted a reason, granted - but if he wanted to hit tons of forums with the same URL in the hope he'd do some good then can you blame him for being brief? _we_ collectively don't think enough in general before we post - on the good side that brings a lot of spontaneity and diversity to the forums but as you probably noticed in the offending thread earlier this week it _didn't_ do us any favours...

in an ideal world we would need a peep who works @ bw in communities related shenanigans (one of teds minions) to do such modding because it isn't fun... but we don't have that - do we therefore give the responsability to someone who is purely doing it out of the goodness of their heart? a mistake imo - or do we all take responsability for this unique and freeform environment which so many of us call home and think more about what we're saying?

BW is by no means a target for these people, it's the attitudes that people adopt and the way they react which turn seemingly innocent posts rather into flamefests

I for one am more interested in addressing cause rather than the resultant problem. If that means we think more about what we say and people take a more relaxed attitude to outsiders (after all this is where the problem honestly lies at the mo) then so be it.

it seems a lot more sensible for us all to make a teeny bit more effort than it does to have to place the responsability and burden of making peeps tow the line in the hands of a small number of people...

we can play as fair as we like but it's the twats that come in to cause the trouble. the plonk list is helping but it shouldn't need to be like that.

i see no reason why there shouldn't be mods now, most forums do. why are u so against it xav?

/edit kinda see what your saying in your h000ge reply... :)

Sorry, but I never made the slightest suggestion they "invaded". I'm stating that people come along and (whether they intend to or not) they manage to set off a reaction.

Its not about the reaction, people saying "fuck off and die" is a part of the freedom that I think your defending. Its about somebody being about who's able to put a lid on the pot before it boils over.

/Edit

since you talk about apportioning blame 50:50, maybe you should consider that these people get what they deserve in the majority of cases. If they pimp, they should expect a negative reaction, cos afaic its akin to somebody throwing flyers all over your front lawn, rubbish in the street, etc.

aye, and as we do not have a supermod forever at our beck and call, we have [imo] mashed out an acceptable, intelligent compromise. BW have been putting in thought, so have we. Something is finally going to happen [hopefully] and I, for one, am glad of it.
