I fully appreciate the questions the guy asked were answered elsewhere, but you cant just lay into him in such an intolerant way.

I think its time to raise our standards a little. We've always enjoyed the slightly anarchic feel of our forums, but to attack a potential paying customer in this way in unacceptable.
This makes BW look like idiots for permitting this sort of thing.

Mr.Blackshirt. I apologise on behalf of BarrysWorld and GAME for the treatment you received here. The lads here are unpaid volunteers who help us out a great deal and its difficult to know how much space to give them sometimes. They give us a lot of their time in return for very little. However, theres a limit.
Frankly, its my fault, I should've made it clear that a less intolerance was going to be required by ALL our regulars. I dont expect squeaky clean yes-sir-no-sir, I do expect civility and respect.

Please, email me at ted@barrysworld.com, I'd like to answer your questions and compensate you for this.

I'm deleting all posts involved in this nonsense, I'm frankly too embarressed to leave them here.

I wouldn't make any suggestions though for a mod here, I'd just let Ted and/or DBs decide for themselves, as I'm sure they're more than aware who'd be level-headed enough to do it (if they decide it's time for one that is).

For a start, I didn't make any more suggestions, I just asked if we could have a moderator now, so firstly "read before you post" :p

Secondly of course they can decide for themselves, I'm just taking what I believe to be an opportune moment to try & rekindle this topic of conversation. I've felt for a long time this is one of the long ignored issues with BarrysWorld that needs addressing. Everyone in the General forum is abusive because never does a thread close, or disappear having been moved/deleted unless the circumstances are exceptional. As today demonstrates quite well.

So, in summary, bite me :p

I agree with mystic, as a Paying customer I dont expect to be called a dickless wonder by a forum mod, regardless of them having an independant opinion that is out of line.

I dunno, the moderation of the general forum is more dificult than ever now with the subscription.

Would a moderator have to provide damage limitation when Bodhi inevitably calls a 'newb' a "mange infested c*nt" which may influence the decision on whether she/he subscribes or not.

Tbh, i think that we're best off without a moderator.

Admittedly, something needs to be done in situations like tonight, however it's not very often that you get a large thread disscussing something BW related that's so important.

As long as it's understood that the General board isn't really anything to do with BW, just something provided by them, then it would be ok.

The "barrysworld" forum that existed before it was all messed about, would have been where that kind have thread would have gone before.

Unlikely to be a General Forum mod, although the sweeps by the Super Mods and Forum Administrators will increase.

BW are in the difficult position of not angering the old timers, still being acceptable to the noob and keep the suits happy. That’s a huge challenge as anything too suit-ish will repel the userbase so the suit have to be silent but prod the known senior community members into being far less tolerant of insults and abuse.

Directors, shareholders and bean counters will be watching this very board very closely. If a trusted community member - moderator or even an ordinary forum user was to flame another user or even an industry competitor, that could be grounds for lawsuits and then it will hit the fan

My suggestions

1) BW trial a few cross board moderators who can edit, move or kill posts but must remark the reasons and examples in a private area for the super mods or admins to see and can refer to if needed. Admins will soon see which mods are not doing well.
There will be a need for a "report a bad moderator" area too.

2) BW create a "veteran" forum area that you can only aspire to after being forum active for a year. Not post count but time. This area would be less moderated and would enable regulars to feel they can vent in a less monitored way.

Don't think this is possible by default in vB, would probably need an add-in.
