wheres the problem in asking people to play nicely in here?

is it so much of a problem to ignore 'hi my name is dillweed, this is my website' posts? granted someone can ask a s00pamod to remeove them if they're really offensive - if that's all we 'want' a mod for then do we really need it?

if the real reason is to get someone onboard who can deal with these incursions then wouldn't it be better to look at how we've contributed to the problem rather than have regulars flame someone, watch the situation escalate and then call the likes of embattle into the fray and use him as an asbestos shield when someone tells their friends that we were rather abusive?

moderation is a good idea in some circumstances but addressing the problem (i.e. flame threads) rather than the cause which is generally down to one or other regular getting abusive seems rather poor... and almost childish...

like hitting someone in the playground and running behind a teacher so they can't retaliate...

Your analergies are all nice, but the bottom line with people, at the end of the day, is they only listen/learn when you force them to. A bully doesn't stop being a bully upon "nicely worded" request, only when the kid he picks on smacks him back upside the head. Thats the way the world works, why will it work any differently here?.... "be nice to them and they'll not do it"..... doesn't work somehow.

As for the "dillweed" example, I don't have a problem with people posting stuff that there proud of, want to show off, whatever. When its not done for the purpose of discussion then they can smeg off, cos thats what this place is ultimatly for. When they get arsey when somebody doesn't like what there posting, they can again, smeg off, just cos they love it doesn't mean anyone else should have to.

My recent post about my website redesign was done with the intent of sparking a conversation, if I'd have just gone "LOOK AT MY SITE, ITS GREAT, WOOOOHHOOOOO!" i'd have expected the beatdown that all the others whom do that get.

so, should we be dealing with the forum regulars who have been acknowledged to be contributing factors? or do we leave things as is, and on top of having to endure their behaviour inflict the responsability of policing them onto 2,3 maybe more select victims/moderators?

Xav, the collective scorn of our community has already been dished out to some offenders. I don't think the question should be what we do with it, more what they will do with it.

Yeah, ok Xav, cba now, nobody is forcing anybody to actually become a moderator. As for dealing, afaic people that act like Bodhi did when he first started, should have been banned long ago, etc.....

I give up, its boring listening to the constant tide of "everybody should be free to do what they like and free of the consequences" these days, score another one for freedom over common sense.

it's not about people being free to do what we like - but you touch on something important there


we all know what is acceptable and what isn't acceptable but that doesn't stop regs stepping waaaay over that line on a regular basis - sure a mod can wave a cattle prod around shouting 'thou shalt not pass' but if people KNOW that what they're doing isn't right can't they make an effort before someone has to sacrifice hours every week showing them how to behave down to a level which they should have learned long before puberty?


computer-types as we are, we're not a bunch of dullards, the stereotype is all wrong (in most cases - 'cept embattle mebbe ) and because we're all either quite determined, or forthright ''clashes'' are inevitable - you may object to things that you read but wouldn't it be better for us to adopt a mindset where we might dislike what's being posted but refrian ourselves from stooping to their level and posting the almost obligatory flame?

Yes, it would be, and we've tried preaching this many times, but in a forum that is so open to free speech and the public, it's just not possible. Bear in mind that new 'regulars' are coming to be all the the time, and no-one really wants to preach the BW etiquette to each and every one of them, do they? Besides, you'll always get those who don't listen regardless. We're hardly a utopian forum, are we?

Another way of looking at it would be to say it was generally your theory that kept the forum going strong for so long without moderation. However the forum's load has gotten too big for it to handle itself anymore.

Don't think I hadn't considered self moderation before I came up with the idea or anything - some people just need to try and see things from a more open persepective, it seems.

PS. If this rota thang is ever going to be done then I'd happily contribute to the honours .
