Felt like an episode where I would have gotten a lot more from the storylines by reading the book. :p

You could see the bit with Joffrey coming obviously, but quite surprised there wasn't more build up surrounding it or general explanation - does it escalate that far in the book?

It doesn't happen in the book. Ros isn't really a key character in the book, so the whole Joffrey thing with the crossbow and the prostitute abuse is TV-specific. In the books he's a dick but not as overtly psychotic. The direct confrontation between Littlefinger and Varys isn't the same either. In fact I'd say this whole episode is the biggest departure from the books we've seen; the Bolton-Jaime meeting, not in the books, the Tywin-Olenna confrontation, not in the books, the Melisandre-Gendry-Arya scene, not in the books. So actually, no, I don't think you'd have gotten more by reading the books, they're departing a lot now.

Oh damn. I've seen a lot of people say they're happy with the TV series being different from the books because they're both great in their own right, I'm certainly enjoying both in equal measure.

Dude iirc...
Joff does have at least two prozzies battered to shit in the books. My memory also says he kills one but I'm not certain.

Are you sure? I don't remember that at all. I remember him taking potshots at peasants from the towers, and saying he was going to give Sansa a good seeing to when after he'd married Margeary, but I don't remember anything else

That's not in this book...or at least not in the 3rd book (so far) I am re-reading them and am at the point just after this episode finishes, I don't remember it happening when I read them through the first time

The Bran scenes are a bit dull IMO. Missed having the usual Dany scene near or at the end as well.

perhaps it is implied? I do recall reading it. That shooting at peasants I don't recall directly but I do remember the little shit acquiring a crossbow and shooting things with it (is that the scene perhaps). Also, he says something about sending the goldcloaks to clear away starving petitioners, much to the chagrin of his mother (who doesn't give two shits about petitioners, but does know about keeping up appearances).

There's a scene where Varys (not Bronn as in the TV series) suggests Joffrey is given some whores to play with, but I'm pretty sure there isn't any follow up about what he actually does with them

iirc in the books it's actually Littlefinger trying to get Joff to chill out / curry favour by giving him something to shag. this backfires mightily: Joff beats them / has them beaten by whitecloaks. woah, I may be confusing books and HBO episodes now :(

It is actually Varys who suggests the whores for Joffrey in the book, not Bronn. In addition, the scene where Joffrey brutalizes Ros and the other whore never unfolds. It is unclear if this suggestion is ever acted on.

She needed Baratheon blood, not Stark blood

I don't remember that distinction in the book, it had to be royal blood. Edric was just handy in the book. Given the choice of a Stark or a bastard born Baratheon it would appear to be a no-brainer, but yes they might get around that logic by making it Baratheon blood in the tv show.

Books spoiler:
I seem to recall in the books that she needs the blood of a King, nothign to do with which house, Arya being sister to a king is not good enough, Gendry being the son of a king is good enough, but in the books Stannis simply uses Edric as he had grabbed him from Storms End (around the same time he was having Renly killed)

unrelated: I quite like how its differing a little from the books, but i think its bugging my gf when i keep stating "oooh, this isnt how they did it in the books!"

I'm not sure I want to read this thread because of all the spoilers and not really knowing if people are bothering to put book at the start of them. But I'm really enjoying the show :)

the spoilers are mostly comparing book to tv show so keep away if you intend to read the books, otherwise you should be ok

It's all getting a little bit meh tbh. They are missing out far too many good bits from the book now and changing even simple scenes for the worse.

The bear scene was gash and completely different to the book - In the book Jaime has more soldiers, outnumbers the Goat's force and makes him back down, rather than just him saying, oh go on then take the wench, cya dude.

Also, not nearly enough Hodoring from Hodor

Episode 8... More gratuitous nakedness, and Cersei's "if you ever line" had me grinning ear to ear.

Glad she didn't go through with the non-nudity clause.

Not glad they changed even more story!

That scene with Samwell was extremely tense.

It was done well, although it would have been even more epic if they'd stuck closer to the books...

Anyway, I want to fight for the side that makes Danaerys take more baths.
