Anyone know where you can buy those Russian track suits? They're hilarious.

How many swimming events actually are there?

"Cannot play media. Sorry, this media is not available in your territory.", evidently the BBC believes that the army pride should be kept inside the country :p

I'm always fascinated by how uninterested India seems to be in international sport (cricket excepted). Second largest population in the world but nowhere at the Olympics or football or anything else really.

I'm fascinated that you implied cricket is an international sport :)

looks like a gold on the cards for the men in the velodrome.

re. what you've said dagaffer, on a smaller scale, i also find it interesting how countries such as denmark and the netherlands, where everyone cycles, has no presence at the velodrome, however, GB where about 4 people cycle on a regular basis have been churning out great cyclists for the last 15 years.

It's because it's not a "sport" in our countries. If you wanna compete in cycling you do it outdoors on long tracks (at least in Sweden). I'm sure there are contenders from Denmark, Netherlands and even Sweden in the real bicycle event :)

You forgot brown river rafting and the backscuttle.

And then there is different World cups and European cups at least 3 times a year ;) Silly sports, just make it 400 meters medley and remove the rest!

There does seem to be a strong connection between Velodromes and distance cycling though; Holland and Denmark, not known as sports cycling countries; 3 Velodromes each, Belgium, with a very strong racing tradition; 14. I would imagine having a few hills helps as well...

106 countries on the International Cricket Council - sounds pretty international to me - only 10 countries compete at the highest level though but it does have a broad base.

Anyone tried to watch in 3D yet? I had a look at the gymnastics last night. Just doesn't work as far as I'm concerned, everything just looks weirdly cut-out. Even worse than watching movies.

Wait.

You mean.... 3D is shite for TV?

I'm hugely surprised, James Cameron told me 3D would cure AIDS.

I've been pretty negative about the Olympics in this thread. To be fair, I always hated them and wasn't going to give them much of a chance.

It's the entrants, you see. I watch them on the telly and I think "what a bunch of up-their-own arse, stuffed-up wankers. Fucking mummy's boys and girls the lot of them". It feels like a sporting event for the middle-class and the rich. In my mind they Olympics is far from its "inclusive" tag. It's more Ayrian than any sporting event known to man.

Of course, I've never had any solid evidence to back me up. Just a feeling....

I love being right, me :)

Ah statistics, is there anything you can't do? Olympic games full of sports like horse riding, yachting, rowing and loads of public school types take part. Big fucking shock.

Reading the article I'd also be worried about using football as the benchmark for doing things differently; "93% of footballers come from state schools", and the enduring image of the English footballer is one of a knuckle-dragging moron who can't count to ten without his agent getting a cut. Great, we'll emulate that then.

Bitch please, I think it's hideously naive to think these people clawed their way out of the slum, worked their arses through poverty and went on to be Olympians.

Oh lord Scouse, you just keep making a fool of yourself. Now you'll probably tell us in the football thread that you didn't need Aquilani anyways

Nothing to stop you going to your local club for any of these 'posh' sports and having a go is there?

Really? I could come from a poor family and get into horse riding?

Lulz :)

93% of footballers come from state schools

I agree that they're knuckle-draggers. But they're representative knuckle-draggers.

All I said was that one of the reasons I dislike the Olympics is that it's an event for the rich - which it demonstrably is...

Bitch please, I think it's hideously naive to think these people clawed their way out of the slum, worked their arses through poverty and went on to be Olympians.

Never thought it was. But then, I never thought it was as shockingly bad as it is either...

A. Yes.
B. Representative of who? Im from a working class family and i sure as hell dont dont earn 100k a week. I certainly dont relate to anything that comes out of most footballers mouths? Why? Because im not a knuckle dragging idiot.
