Should post that in the thread where a load of people who complain about lethargy, depression and how they can't combat their fatness due to thyroid problems or their "genes" and see how quickly you get called a cunt.
I'm currently loaded with cold, went to the gym yesterday and felt totally fine for a good few hours afterwards :p

Went for a nice ride on the MTB yesterday near Ladybower in the Peak District. Glorious sunshine.

Put on a bit of weight recently - way too much beer and too much gluttony on my part. Add to that on a weekly basis someone at work is bringing a load of cakes in. I need to man up and stop eating so much.

Gym tonight with the missus - I *detest* the gym but we've done well keeping up pilates for over a year now and I'd hate to miss that - all the stretching that I don't bother doing any other time is fantastic. Plus added core strength.

I'll do 30 mins on teh exercise bike, because I can listen to an audiobook when I'm doing that and stick in the fat-burn zone. Then I'll lift a few weights aimlessly for another 20 minutes and feel slightly sore tomorrow.

I'm determined to not put weight on over xmas. Put on a stone last year. This year if I remain level I'll be happy.

Do people find, when they exercise vigorously over a period of time (IE everyday) they get to the 6th day, and you're knackered, go to the gym, but there's like nothing there, you take a day break, and it's still no good, but take two days break, go back, and you have more energy than @Scouse discussing Jesus on a Bike whilst spreading Communism?

Two days after a big piece of exercise and I'm chock full of beanz. You need recovery time to perform at a high level.

Any athlete would struggle to go full pelt every day, you need rest days.

When I was really gymming it up I'd go 3.5 days per week, eg every other day. On the bike I can go two days before a rest day is in order. What I really love doing on the bike is go full blast one day, then rest, and the day after the rest day do a really easy, slow loop. That slow loop just feels soooooo good, and the day after that my bod is ready for more tbh. Can't wait! 8th of Jan I get the old all-clear from le doctor! (I hope ;) )

Ten thousand miles! That's pretty fucking spanky right there @Tom - you should save up some cashola and do a round the world trip. :)

Went to Sherwood Pines in the snow myself the other day. I love cycling in the snow me:

You need proper tyres for those conditions, I have studded tyres for my road and MTB. Noisy but very assured. They look cool too :)

tsss, trés ghei Tom! nah, I jest. the NL just hardly ever warrants going beyond an 'average' tyre. last time I had to was with @Will: I was over in Scotia, and he looked at my rugged (for NL conditions) Schwalbe's and categorically stated I was borrowing his 2.7" Kenda's if I wanted to make it down the hill alive 0_o

Going to attempt to give up unnatural sugar for the next 2-4 weeks and see what happens to weight. Basically stopped drinking anything with sugar in it and am now avoiding sweets.

Obviously the weekends are going to be killer as we tend to eat out / cinema most weekends.

Weighed in at 87.3kg this am, down from 87.7kg yesterday morning (yesterday was my official weigh in, decided to check in the gym today just to see, so I know that's my fluctuation range)

If I hit 85kg without much issue from sugar alone I know that's my dietary issue. If I don't, will refine what I eat again. Goal is probably 80kg by May, then looking at getting back to 85kg for August.

Should be interesting.

hmmm good one. tbh best additional tip I can give you is to start avoiding factory breads. if you must eat bread, find a good baker and use the heavier, less processed breads.

I have lost about 60lb in the last 12 months purely by eating whatever I want but ensuring that I always burn more than I eat. Some days I eat more than 4,000 calories. I use Myfitnesspal to control my intake and [lately] Strava to measure my outgoings. It's also quite good at getting me to balance my carbs/fat/protein intake. I eat tonnes of chocolate (Lindt dark hazlenut bars are my fave).

Put 1st 1lb on in the past 17 days.

My aim is for that to be gone by Feb. Can't stand the feeling. Everything's noticeably heavier and my skin feels like it's horribly tight, like I'm wearing an invisible wetsuit just underneath it :(

Myfitnesspal is epic and one of the few useful apps out there. I did exactly what you've described to lose 7st before the days of apps.

Yep, the only bad thing is that I think it over-estimates the calorie burn of various exercises. For instance, Strava says for a 45 mile ride I burn about 1400 calories, no more. MFP will say 2200 for the same ride.

I thought this is interesting:

what a difference a year makes.jpg

On the left is a ride I did in December 2013. On the right is the same ride, give or take one or two minor route differences. The major climbs are all the same, although the ride on the left was with a slightly tougher gear ratio (39:25 on the left, an easier 39:28 ratio on the right). The difference is mostly down to weight loss.

Yep. I put on a fair bit of weight xmas and you can *really* tell the difference.

The bird is losing weight too - and this should be motivation for her - if you can see what improvements occur with lower weights then it helps immensely psychologically IMO.

May have accidentally agreed to do a Tough Mudder in September.

Feck.

Guess I'm introducing cardio into my workout soon.

Well I'm doing the Cheshire Cat in a couple of months. It isn't that big a deal for me, 105 miles isn't at all problematic. However, there is the tiny issue of Mow Cop, which is a lot longer than what you see here:

btw if you want real motivation check out this guy - he's going for the world record, most number of miles cycled in a year:

https://www.strava.com/activities/240684418/overview

I don't know if you can see it without being a premium member, but his heart rate is 97% "endurance". To me, that's absolutely astonishing.

@Tom - I can't believe it tbh. He's averaging 180 miles / day at the moment. 12 hours in the saddle today. Which is fine if he's independently wealthy and doesn't have a job or friends...

I think I heard about that guy. My parents were talking about how people in their cycling club were asking if anyone wanted to let him stay at their house for a night so he had somewhere new to cycle to. He's planning to do ~200 miles a day all year or something.

Then he should stop pussying around Milton Keynes and cycle three times around the world this year instead ;)

I'm not convinced we're genetically capable of withstanding such physiological stress. Impress feat of will regardless.

Dunno if Eddie Izzard can do 43 marathons in 51 days with no training it says to me that physical endurance feats are what humans are best at.

Works with man vs horse too. The longer the distance the race the more likely humans will win - because although we're slower we can just go and go...
