pff biking is well and good but damn my arse feels pulverized today :(

that said; first time biking since August last year. I was not as fucked as I thought I'd be, although I am not strong and lack stamina. I'd imagined beforehand that the first ever hill would wreck me, but although it slowed me it didn't make me stop. Did 25ish km with a mate who's fairly new to biking and he took things slow and careful which suited me just fine.

I was worried that certain road surfaces (eg bricks on older NL roads) would hurt my shoulder, but although I certainly did feel 'different' on that surface than what I'm used to I didn't feel pain or worrying discomfort of any kind. Yay :D

Yays :)

Have you been doing shoulder strengthening exercises? What are they?

My shoulders are really feeling the strain of banging down the sides of mountains for extended periods of time. A friends has offered to show me some rotator cuff shoulder strengthening exercises which I may take up doing twice a week - I don't do any weights at the moment due to the fact that I find the idea (and the actual practicality of it) so terminally boring, but I don't think I can neglect that side of exercise any more and live relatively pain-free :(

I haven't actually been doing anything (foolish, I know). I'm a bit feart of really getting back in to things until the docs say I can. That said, I am "exercise stable" whatever that means. I shall set up a meeting with a physical therapist next week to see what I can see.

Jeebus :)

I know it's doable - bloke at my local bike shop did blackpool and back in 24 hours. The madman. (I'd have stayed the night at least).

I'm happy doing 60-odd on mainly offroad paths on my big knobbly mountain kings - although I do fancy pushing that a little further. The problem is most of my mates just fancy 3-4 hours of trails, rather than epic all-day bike marathons with camping in the evenings.

I'm gonna look into doing some stuff in the lake district with maybe youth hostels as the overnight stops - as long as we can secure the bikes properly...

If you want to go on longer rides the key is nutrition. Get to 30 miles in and stuff a load of food down your throat. Keep hydrated, more than you need. You'll surprise yourself at how much further you can cycle. Most people run out of juice because they haven't eaten enough food.

Did a Color Me Rad 5K event yesterday. Bit of a cock-up really, the course was only 3.75km long - they had only bothered to measure it beforehand in Google Maps...

Hmm I posted this elsewhere and it vanished. :(

I has changed mah mind about a recumbent. Well, at least for the moment. I had a play on a couple yesterday, they were lovely bikes but the owner wanted too much money for the one I was mainly interested in (£1500 for a 4-year-old bike that probably cost about £2300). Plus the learning curve is quite steep, you're basically learning to ride a bike all over again. It's a lot of money to spend on a second hand bike that's difficult to ride for a few hundred miles or so.

So I'm currently playing with Mercian's frame builder, on their website. It's bloody brilliant. And the results give me a stiffy.

Aluminium and carbon fibre can get to fuck. Steel is much prettier. I'd go with titanium, but unfortunately I'm not rich.

Definitely write it down. If you started today, I'm assuming that was just the initial fit test? Wait until you've done the first actual workout, then get back to me about how hard it is.

Oh, and that's month one, wait for the Max workouts next month, especially the first one which you do on the same day as you do the fit test :p

So to be honest since my first ski holiday this year I've been slacking really hard and put about 20lb back on ( I'm guessing around 5-10 water weight ). 180 back up to 200 :(

Did my first real workout in a few months today, back on the wagon. Gonna bust my ass so hard to get ready for next ski season. My legs are going to be crazy by christmas.

It's nice to have started again but I really shouldn't have taken 5 months off, or let myself put 20lb back on.

Fitness and health is a life long journey.... When life throws a curve ball sometimes our health and fitness regimes take second place... As long as you are aware it's easy to get back on track.... I know since my dad died I have been eating ice-cream... I'm not now but it took time for me to cut it out and although slow I'm getting back to normal :)

5-2 diet + strict buying habits m8.

I haven't much self control. If there's stuff in the house it's getting eaten. If I'm out of the house I'll pig out on whatever. As much as I try not to, I still can't really help myself.

So I do two things - 1) When I buy food I never buy treats. Only healthy shit. The bird, on the other hand, buys ice cream and occasional biscuts.

2) 5-2 diet. No eating at all before 7:30pm. Then I just have a veggie stir fry, or veggie moussaka, or dal, or something that's less than 500 calories. All in one go.

The no eating at all thing became very easy to do after a few weeks. And 400-odd calories at 7:30 is enough to stop me having trouble with feeling too hungry to sleep later on.

I keep up my biking, fast day or not - I enjoy it too much (audiobooks if out by myself). And for two days a week I save myself 1600 calories that I would otherwise stuff in my maw. Which means on non-fast days I don't have to watch what I'm eating - which is the thing that saves me. I only have to exercise self-control for two days whilst I'm at work...

Edit: I agree with @Yoni - it's a lifelong journey thing. Been doing the 5-2 for 2 years now - because it's dead easy to stick too and means I don't have to obsess over what I eat. I tend to choose healthy stuff because I feel better on it - but I wouldn't cry if I ate a whole tub of ice cream one sunday...

I'm churning along riding. After a few outings I am now at the 35km circle. Hope to bump up to 50km in the coming two weeks. Encountered some Skyrim-esque wildlife today so snapped a phone-pic.

did 71(and a bit) km today. strava is kind and my gps is a bit wonky (it seems all the HTC One Xs are), but hey ho you get the idea. I feel like death atm: its about a 23km jump up from my previous long distance. nothing an early night wont fix though. program is to stick in a few short rides and then another 70+km one.

Well Brenin was a great success with the missus' new bike - she was much better and more confident and did stuff that she'd never attempted before.

I absolutely caned it on Friday - was flying - so much so that I went back on Saturday morning just to see if I could hit it even harder. I did:

Though you should see the mountain* ;)

*not even dented

But I'm manly. I was back on the bike within 30 seconds and it didn't slow me up much. Went to a pharmacy and bought some peroxide and some bandages, bleached and wrapped then got mullared on the barrel of beer I brought camping with us. Rarrrrr! :D

I eat shit loads every day, usually at least 3,500 calories. But then again I'm riding 50 miles a day and burning much of that. So far this year I'm at about 6,600 miles cycled.

I have about 17lbs to go before I reach what I think will be my correct weight. I've just thrown away about 15 shirts and 5 pairs of trousers as they're all too big. It's nice to be getting back where I was in my 20s, before I started working in this industry :)

Best thing is, my average bpm has dropped by about 20-30. Sitting down at the computer, it's resting at about 55bpm. I reckon in a few months that'll be in the 40s.

Triathlon next year.

Don't go too low unless you intend to start competeing at a high level m8. Once my resting bpm got below 60 I started to get dizzy on standing. Same happened to my g/f's dad when he used to do alpine cross country in the army - got a bit too fit for everyday use.

AND COMMENT ON MY PAIN FFS
