Speaking of foods, I had the keto off for 7 weeks, and it's now back on again. I'm starting to feel it: just spent 10 minutes going over my kitchen looking for anything carb related (to eat) before I realized what I was doing. Tomorrow I am roasting a chicken and eating about half of it with a mountain of salad. Desert will be a quad-espresso. After that I will make chicken soup / stew depending on what I have left over.

What was the off-keto reason for @TdC?

Doesn't the lack of available sugars mean you're a little mentally lethargic on keto?

the off-keto was me experimenting with something, drinking a lot and generally being weak. also carbs are easy and very very seductive: for some reason it's "easier" for me to pop down the baker and get a (fairly healthy albeit bread based) sammich (and then not be able to resist a sweet thing to go with it) than it is to walk an equal distance the other way and get stuff to make a salad. don't get me wrong: I can cook fairly well and it's relatively easy to make low carb meals. my problem is being easily seduced by the sweet siren call of carbs. they're addictive you know, really. last night I was figuratively having a conversation with my carb-monkey, who was demanding to have something carb based to eat :(

re sugars, I had thought so too initally, but it is not the case. if anything, there seems to be more energy available. when keto really gets going there can be occasions when it seems to me I have taken drugs, that much (mental) energy (and focus) is available. I have also been biking while in ketosis, and I was not at all tired or lethargic physically. strange thing for me is that while in keto consuming any carbs sends me to sleep: every now and then, say every two weeks, I do a carb-up day and the effects of that is that I usually spend the time sacked out on the couch doing f to the all :)

I'd love to see an objective measure of that. Science-stylee. :)

For example, a number of years back I smoked a lot of weed. I almost fell into the trap that I thought I was making mental connections that I wasn't when I was straight. However, the drug made me feel like that, objectively speaking I was a lot slower, I just felt like I wasn't.

Your brain runs on available carbs and a lack of them may give rise to a kind of euphoria. It doesn't mean that you're actually definitely performing better on an objective scale? It'd be nice to measure it somehow.

Funnily tho - I've been out biking on my fast-days. For the first hour I tend to be a lot quicker/have a lot more energy than on days when I'm eating. I think it could be down to the fact that my body isn't having to do any digesting and that everyone has about an hour's spare energy in their muscles to burn up, so for the first hour I'm burning up available energy without the negative overhead of having to run my digestive system.

Of course, after the first hour it gets a lot harder :)

hehe I did say "it seems to me". I have no idea if I really have more energy. I *do* know, on the other hand, that eating carbs while in ketosis sends me to sleep.

Also, slight correction: your brain doesn't run on carbs per se, neither does your body. Carbs are one of the three things your body can metabolize, besides proteins and fats. Tbh I don't know enough biology to really explain everything, but afaik all that shit all gets taken apart by virtue of the carbon in the molecule chains and ends up being a very simple kind of sugar. The relative easiness of the process is naturally weighted towards carbs, and your body can store a certain amount of extra energy after a carb binge (hence pasta-parties when bike racing). Your body is also naturally geared to consume itself, with a preference for muscle over fat, which is basically why starvation diets always fail (you need to burn some fat rather than eat some muscle so to speak). Fats also get processed in to the simplest form of sugar, but the metabolic process is different, and it seems your body needs to "work" "harder" for want of better words.

Afaict, being in keto -for me- means I am skipping part of a natural diet (carbs, eh) but because of all the fats and proteins coming in my body doesn't think it's starving. Also, it becomes conditioned to work on fats in lieu of carbs (maybe, I frankly have doubts about that). My first year of keto worked for me. I lost almost 30 kilos, wasn't ill any more (or less) than I ever am and generally felt a shitload better. I also had to spend a tonne of money on new clothes 0o

I'm doing Tough Mudder in a month. Currently doing a lot of weights and running 3 to 4 miles per run with the occasional 6 mile.

Brains run on sugars, which the body synthesizes from fat in the absence of dietary sugar, but only after a period of sugar drought. This is why entering into keto can be a bit shitty, you can temporarily feel fucked and tired and woozy but your liver realises whats going on pretty quickly and sorts you out.

Post exercise you must have a massive mental slump tho. It's why I said "available" carbs (sugars). I eat a fair few carbs and I'm a total retard for an hour or so after exercise - so if you have to manufacture sugars it must be massive.

I haven't really noticed myself chum but I will keep an eye out for what you describe. I accidentally had some puddings and beers yesterday, and ended up in a seriously dodgy club -like girls dancing on the bar dodgy- , so my liver is prolly going wtf from both the alcohol and the sugars ;-)

very similar. I'd say my bar girls were wearing slightly less. also, the music was absolutely CRAP: 30 second bad house versions of popular songs with the DJ shooting his mouth off the whole time. OFC it's all tuned to the average attention span of the regular clientele, but hey ho to each their own.

You're gonna pant like a paedo in a schoolyard :)

Have fun with it m8. I start work on Monday so my hours-long regular daytime biking action, meeting a variety of mates for their lunch hour and cycling out with them to a number of choice cafe's round the green hilly outskirts of Nottingham is going to come to a crushing halt :(

To be fair tho. I've had a fucking good run!

Question is @TdC - what kind of bike do I get for the bird for her birthday. Considering you pointed me in the direction of my Solaris (which was pretty much the best thing I've ever bought) I thought I'd ask your opinion. I'm thinking a lightweight hardtail with 120mm of travel on her fork - something she can do trail centres and long rides on...

Agree. But I think you mean t'other thread m8. You'll not find the porkers in here ;)
I've had a drink mate, I'll copy paste it to the other thread, if a mod could delete this post that'd be dandy. Haha

Nvm sorted, can delete the one in this thread meself!

hmm tbh if she's not freakishly tall *blinks* get her a Cotic Soul! Another UK designed choice could be the On-One Inbred X5 (899 iirc) which tbh would be a nice starting point. Another nice brand to look at, though I've not ridden them myself is Genesis bikes.

That's fucking great m8. You should post that into the 8 years thread ;)

I thought about the soul (she's a shortarse) but two of us riding about on cotics would look too gay. Like matching wetsuits. :\

I've also thought about the Inbred (though I was thinking the 45650b, though I'm not sure it's suited to long rides). Mate of mine has a Genesis - they're very nice frames but his is heavy tbh, and I'm kind of hoping I can find her something lighter than my solaris.

I may have to go "standard" bike for a weight/price/performance punch for her. As much as a steel hardtail would be lovely if I could get her on a light aluminium frame with a good gearset then she'll moan a fuckload less on long rides - if I think about her comfort and effort then my ears and emotions will get a break ;)

I'm not averse to spending £1200 on a two year old model of something that's now retailing at 50% off...

Increase the spec and spend the difference on clothing, or a decent bike rack?

I was actually thinking something like this but she's not blown away with the look of the canyons - which is a shame as they're great bikes (mates got the AM - and it's been great).

Gonna get me a towbar for my Type-R, then a decent towbar rack. Then my next investment will be a couple of kayaks which will go on the roof. That way I'll be able to get all my camping equipment in the car too - and I'll be totally tooled up for ridiculously active weekends away in Wales :D

I may have a 230 mile ride coming up soon, 2 days is do-able but I want to see if I can do it in 1.5 days, or even 1 day.

Jeebus :)

I know it's doable - bloke at my local bike shop did blackpool and back in 24 hours. The madman. (I'd have stayed the night at least).

I'm happy doing 60-odd on mainly offroad paths on my big knobbly mountain kings - although I do fancy pushing that a little further. The problem is most of my mates just fancy 3-4 hours of trails, rather than epic all-day bike marathons with camping in the evenings.

I'm gonna look into doing some stuff in the lake district with maybe youth hostels as the overnight stops - as long as we can secure the bikes properly...

I know right, same brands and all. That said, Cotics are nice bikes. Up to you tbh :)

Another thing: Planet-X has enticed Brant back to do things with Titus, fairly nice bikes. What you can also do for that price, is scout for a 2nd hand top line Specialized, Giant, Trek or Kona. OK, they're pret-a-porter bikes, but the high spec ones are pretty damn good, and second hand may fall in your price range. As long as they've been handled with care, and people owning top line bikes tend to do that tbh, then there's really no shame in going that route imo.

Oh, also: I own a titanium 456, with a fairly sexy (but now dated) carbon/magnesium 140mm air-sprung fork. I have owned a steel 456 (same fork). The steel was better. Also, biking a 60 mile run on a 456....eeeeeeeh nah, I'll pass. Tbh I'm jelly as hell of your Cotic. Get the woman a Cotic too. As long as you don't start wearing the same gore-tex jackets nobody will think you're middle-aged ;-)
