Right boys I am hitting the gym big time and I hAve 2 questions for you...
1. Does what you eat really have that big effect on your performance? Sometimes I can work really hard, other days I struggle to run a mile?
2. It flashes up HIGH HEART
RATE on the treadmill and really puts me off as I am only jogging. Is this ok? Or should I only exercise to 85% max heart rate?

Thank you x
Eating has a huge impact. Are you trying to put on muscle or just get fitter and tone up your running muscles? If you're trying to bulk then you should be having some carb/fat/protein 2 hours or so before and an hour or so after. Not that much, but enough so there's plenty of fuel floating about in your blood during the session and afterwards when the muscles are repairing. If you're just going for general fitness, it's not that vital. Just make sure you leave a good 90 minutes between eating and jogging otherwise you might end up chundering all over your nice gym shoes :)

Trying to lose bulk chilly that has hung around since having kids. Can't seem to hit the diet and exercise at the same time! Do one and forget the other. Need to stop eating the crap now I am gyming. Thanks for your advice.

Russell tis no joke that when you reach a certain age everything becomes more difficult re weight, fitness....it is very important that you build some muscle to counter the natural decline in metabolism, this will help with the cardio which unfortunately can't be avoided if losing bulk.

For the first couple of trips take it slow, really don't over do it.... If you can get a few PT sessions in as they will point you in the right direction.

For food do not try starving yourself whilst training .... I've been there and I felt dreadful! I eat oats with unsweetened almond milk and blueberries 1 hour before a session After I recover with a latte. Then I'll eat protein and veggies around that.

Routine is

10 mins warm up on a cardio machine 45 to 60 mins strength and 20 mins cardio.

If you just have 30 mins just do cardio or strength :)

1. Even when you get insanely fit, this will still hold true unfortunately :)
2. As previously said, the heart rate advice is aimed at keeping people in certain 'zones' based on Aerobic and Anaerobic activities (or fat burning and cardio fitness improvement). I nearly ALWAYS hit the HIGH HEART rate warning and even at my fittest it still only improved a little. I was checked out by a doc and his conclusion 'don't worry some people have a naturally higher heart rate'. My resting rate was 50bpm but I could easily hit 190bpm if pushing myself hard during a run. I'm 35 now and if the message starts to piss my off I just set my age to 18 which sets the upper limit of the HIGH HEART rate warning.

As you get fitter, you should see improvement but as always if you have a high heart rate and start to feel pain or dizziness it's time to stop and get yourself checked out :)

Knowing what your heart is up to can be quite liberating. This was my track for today:

http://www.sportstracklive.com/track/detail/peowpeowpeowlasers/Cycling/1390541

Ignore the early spike of 203, for some reason the app often logs a spike at that point in the ride (totally flat road). The highest is about 170, and that's cycling up a 10-15% incline for a couple of minutes. Even last year that would have been 185bpm, but the amount of cycling I've been doing lately has knocked a couple of stone from my weight and massively improved my fitness (and I already considered myself a fairly fit cyclist, even if I was overweight). More importantly, my bpm recovery rate has also improved from a typical 45 per minute to 54 today. And my average bpm has dropped by a good 15-20 beats.

I estimate that in another 2 months I'll be dipping under 13 stone, which should be about right for me. It will be interesting to watch what my heart does during exercise at that weight. When I was in my early 20s and cycling all over the place, my resting bpm was under 50. Currently I think it's at about 70. I doubt I'll ever get it down to 50 again, but I can at least give it a go.

I think it's quite important to have goals. My two goals this year are to get under 13 stone and to cycle 10,000 miles in a year. I'm only about 3,000 miles in so far this year, so I think the second challenge will be a real struggle (will be busy with work during summer). My goals for next year are to start jogging, learn how to swim properly (not just spash in a general direction), and once I'm good at those two, to take up triathlon. Of course taking up triathlon has nothing to do with my desire to own one of these:

And yes Scouse, I will still be buying a recumbent. I could buy one now but I've spent an awful lot of money on equipment of late and I'd like to maintain a decent slush fund in my account...

I've bought a 'trigger point' roller. Anyone tried one? Find it really good on my back and legs.

Forgot all about this thread. Done a half marathon and broke my groin after about 8/9 miles and finished in 2hr 6 mins. After 2 months physio I'm back running and have 2 10k runs in May and another half in June.

Nice @Tom.

This is what I was up to with my mates yesterday. Aching today. But completely worth it for massive epic-ness:
Snowdon. It fucking rocks. Especially on bikes!Snowdon.jpg

Looks amazing @Scouse. Have done a fair amount of mountain biking with mates at dedicated resorts - will definitely need to look into taking it up a proper mountain one time, instead of hiking it.

Did my first parkrun at the weekend. Haven't been running too much recently, but pushed myself on this. Heart almost burst out of my chest!

Having gotten completely bored of the gym I've decided to give running a try. I want to enjoy it but fuck me it hurts. I've got blisters on my fucking blisters and I always get an unbearable stitch for about 10 minutes half way through my run.

That's what I found for the short time I did running. But then that sort of exercise is always worst at the start.

I binned it off in favour of the bike. See more, slightly easier on the cardio but longer days out and none of the joint problems associated with running sports...

I wish I had nice cycle routes but around London it's a bit crap.

Will give it another couple of weeks and see how I go.

For cycling you could try picking up the canal paths.... docklands right round to Paddington... ?

I actually run up Regents Canal and into Vicky park. There are loads of cyclists. I'm going to give it a go, but instead of following the canal for ages I'll just do a load of laps of the park.

Sounds dull as fuck m8.

Get out, see things. If you just want to do laps go to the gym and hit the cycle machine. At least you can gawp at some birds arse in front of you :(

After the gym today I had a cup of something called Lean Greens, it smelled, tasted and looked like dirty swamp water. All of my 5 a day in one dreadful little cup, can't complain I guess.

Scam tbfh.

Just eat a shitload of vegetables every day. It's really easy to do and good for you...
As soon as I'd seen you quoted me I could've put money on a reply like this. Unfortunately for me I don't eat enough veg, I don't like much of it, this seems like an alright substitute for now.
