Truefax. I've been on Keto since the middle of December and have lost nearly a stone. I've basically cut out all the sugar and stuck to a strict list of foods and whammo, it's pretty much dropping off. I eat less than 25g of carbs a day and drink 2-3 litres a day of green tea. Water gets a bit boring after a while.

Check out /r/keto on Reddit if you need more pointers and I've got a MFP diary on the go here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/diary/moifmurphy - password is bacon.

You only seem to eat two meals a day

I also keto (more extreme form ie I go between low calorie induced keto to lchf keto) and it is absolutely fantastic in terms of weight loss! I lost 75kgs in 2007/8 and 35kg in 2012 (I was a very very big unit in 2007 over 150 kg).

Basically I made an error coming off the 2007/8 go in that I let bread back into my diet on a regular basis mint knowing I had metabolic syndrome. I lost the weight again in 2012 and now I'm stable by not eating simple carbs 90% of the time.

The beauty of the diet or way of life as it should become is the no hunger factor :)

Yeah but day one is rape mode!
Wait till you hit month 2, fit-test and a full 60 min video back to back :) I did it 3 times last year and in the middle of doing it again at the moment. Once you are fit enough its addictive!

And following it properly does mean eating right. It is tough, I did the first 30 days off the back of completing P90X and then hurt my neck in a non insanity incident so had to stop. I will be having another go at some point this year though.
I eat properly - sort of, but I do tend to have a few beers once a weekend or every other weekend + at least one takeaway per week. Though outside of those treats I am pretty strict with what goes in!

Make it yourself innit. Boil the kettle and pour it into a big jug, 4 tea bags and 4 teaspoons of sweetener. Let it stew for a bit then wang it into a 2 litre bottle. Top up with cold water.

I'm 6'3, so I don't think going much below 78 is that possible. I think i'll prob have a 6pack around then :p

My initial target is 100kg, from approx 160. Currently 133.5ish. Once I'm at about 115kg, I'm going to ramp the exercise right up. I wont be so uncomfortable running and so on. I'm 6'3" with a wide frame so I doubt I'd get to below 80. I'd not want any less muscle than that anyway.

Yeah, I've noticed I've gone from a croissant and juice or toast / sandwich, crisps and coke / fat twat dinner to what I eat now. I only eat when I'm hungry now and I put away enough protein to keep me from needing to eat as much as I did before. I keep expecting to get hunger pains but they never come. Eggs and fish at breakfast does me until around 2PM then that salad fills me up again until the evening. Then I usually have some cheese or a bag of pork scratchings. I'm a creature of habit as well which helps.

Why not tbfh.

Although I'm not a fan of overly protein heavy diets. You may lose weight, but they're not healthy.

Keto diet isnt protein heavy it is healthy fat heavy. As for it being unhealthy... I'm yet to be convinced :)

In my view, the health risks on living as a fat bastard FAR outweigh the risks of a diet that's been studied to death and shown to be pretty safe when handled correctly. Given I only intend to do keto for another few months (get the bulk of my spare tyre off) then switch to just eating correctly (which I was doing for the second half of last year anyway) I view the risk, such as it is, as entirely acceptable and worthwhile, given the goal.

Higher levels of cholesterol (which you'd expect filling your bodies full of fat) - so all the stuff that comes with that (not good stuff) if you do it long term.

You'll lose weight very quickly tho, so as @Chilly said, there are benefits to balance too. And if you go back to normal healthy eating and exercise when you reach your target weight then that's a positive - and you can bring your cholesterol back down then.

Short term it's not a terrible thing. And if you're epileptic... ;)

Actually the cholesterol thing is a bit of a red herring, as far as I'd read. Due to the changed metabolic pathways that burn fat as primary fuel during keto, you dont end up raising your cholesterol levels that much. And, indeed, you can eat fats such as olive oil that contain no cholesterol anyway. And, also, you dont HAVE to eat fat on a keto diet. It's simply an easy way to stay feeling full. Personally, I eat about a quarter of the amount of fat that most keto'ers do. It increases my defecit and means I dont have to drench everything in oil or eat ultra-fatty cuts of meat.

I looked up an NHS collected review based on the cochrane rules before I posted and the increase in HDL and LDL cholesterol was in that.

If you look stuff up online you'll find that the vast majority of articles say that BMI is a pile of shit and doesn't apply to anyone - which is rubbish. It's great at what it does - which is tell the majority of the population whether they're fat or not.

Of course, upon hearing they are fat most people try to say that they're somehow special and that the BMI scale doesn't apply to them - or that the whole thing is shit :)

You've never had smoked kippers or mackerel for breakfast?
Nah, my lass and her dad often do though and it stinks the whole bloody house out. Think that's enough to put me off, hah.

This is quite simply, bullshit. Dietery cholesterol has little relation to blood cholesterol unless you're a hyper responsder.
Most people on keto see significant improvements to their lipid profiles.
The best part , and main reason I started keto was because I saw hard science proving it.

http://healthimpactnews.com/2013/sw...ogma-in-favor-of-low-carb-high-fat-nutrition/

Go to r/keto and search for blood work or cholesterol and you'll see hundreds of before/afters with significant improvements.
