17kg down since the start of the year without really trying. 8 of that in the last 3 weeks as I realised that weight loss is not just an impossible pipe dream. I haven't been keeping up with this thread, but I find /r/loseit on reddit to be exceptionally motivating. I don't post there but reading the success (and failure) stories really reinforces that it's just a matter of time and work and not impossible. Most of my life (and all of my adult life) I've been a fat fuck, I feel so good doing something about it after years of simply not caring. I feel like an alcoholic hitting rock bottom (albeit months and months ago). Christmas doesn't scare me, I spend very little time at the ancestral home piling food in my hole anyway.

That's awesome Chilly, well done!

Christmas is international cheat day though, if everyone on here isn't in a pigs in blankets induced meat coma I'll be disappointed.

oh yeah I'll be balls deep in goose fat roasted taters as much as the next guy. It's just the sitting about for a full week eating chocs and curry that I don't, and won't, be doing.

my first foray into planned exercise is having my bike on my turbo trainer in my garage. I can watch episodes of futurama and other TV while I count the kms down. Not got a bike computer hooked up to it yet so no real way of measuring performance but I've got one coming tomorow I'll fit and then I can start competing with myself for 5 and 10km times. It's a really shitty trainer, too, so it's hard as fuck to actually peddle, which is good.

Yeah the occasional threads from r/keto, r/loseit and r/progresspics are really what got me to start. When I dropped 20lb in 2 weeks on keto it was like "shit son, you wanted to lose 20 in 6 months and be happy? You can drop soooo much more".
It was great motivation to do something about it.

Tip on the bike - resistance settings are important. Doing 30mins on the lowest setting isn't very effective but you see a lot of gym goers air pedalling on that setting and then going to mcds or eat a "healthy" carb loaded cereal bar because they "worked out" :p

Yeah my trainer is set to max resistance. I used to do a lot of cycling so I have very powerful legs, I have no problem doing high energy cycling, it's just the endurance that I need to build up so I can push harder for longer.

And to your point on eating, that's what my main epiphany has been about. I used to eat so much shit. A lot of the time it wasn't shit, it was just too much. I've no intention of doing the old gym->mcdonalds tango.

And in fact, since I've got shitloads of free time, once I've lost a few more stone I'm going to get a personal trainer. I'm a bit of a weak bastard (mentally) so I really need someone to give me shit when I slack off. That will probably be in Feb or so.

Could never do that myself. When the going gets tough I get off - and it's totally impossible to watch telly if you're doing it properly.

The reason biking works is that when you push yourself to the pub that's 20 miles away you've no fucking choice to do that 20 miles back...

I lost a kilo over crimble, too. My mum was aghast, as she had put on about 2kg.
My girlfriend's been mocking me non stop for it, it's definitely just jealousy. Weighed myself again today and I'm a little bit over what I was before Christmas, result! :D

My scales tell me I'm down 3kg this last 7 days, but I'm not sure I believe them.

Did 2200-odd tracked (via Endomondo) miles last year on my MTB.

Aiming to beat that this year, whilst hopefully having a job too ;)

This is the kind of thing I hate reading, I need to get my knee seen to but worry I'll end up spending too much on nothing.

On yer bike too.

I had surgery on both my ankles, did my medial collateral in my left knee and my posterior cruciate in my right (non-surgical tho). Physio was OK - but I've been stonkingly great since losing weight (much less stress on joints) and much much *much* better since biking a lot.

I've read a few places that cycling (in particular backwards) is really good for strengthening knees, plan on getting a bike around Easter time for trimming a bit of fat away for Summer :D

Good work that man.

Convince your mates. Then on Saturdays or Sundays pick a pub about 20 miles away (offroad if you can) and go there. Have lunch. Come back, knackered and happy.

Not gonna lie to you. It's fucking hard work for the first couple of months. Your ass will hurt for the first couple of weeks (do NOT get a gel seat, seriously - it goes away quick). You will die of sweaty arse and wonder why you're bothering.

Then one day you wake up and you can just do it, no sweat. And you'll get up and feel like you're in lower gravity - your legs will just strangely be full of bounce, until you learn to control it :)

Looking forward to it! I've got quite a few mates that regularly just bike off into the distance for the day, or pile into a car and drive over to the Lakes to bike there for a day or two, I'm quite envious :)
