You talk about "true elite pvpers".

Guess there more then one way, but this is how diablo ii was when I played it at launch and up to 1.07 patch wich killed the game.
You mean, the point where you failed to stay competitive, because the cookie cutter builds you had become good with suddenly didn't work anymore? It's easy to blame game mechanics for failure, but you simply need to adapt.

Same goes for any game, devs make balance patches and you simply adapt to the new rules.

The same was true for DAoC when ToA arrived and gave ALOT more options in RvR (albeit the item grind was horrid), the players that could not adapt simply left.

The same will be true for D3, there'll be a "game changing" patch and the bitter veterans leave because they are so set in their own ways.

Seems you enjoyed stacking immunity items to the point where you got heals from taking damage and abusing buriza/windforce and snare sash.

Game was not even a shadow of itself after 1.07. People like Xanatea and Belgarion both prominent and acknowlaged skilled players in D2 and of daoc in the past instantly left after 1.07, as did anyone else worth mentioning.

I'm sure you had a blast killing frozen orb and lightning strike sorceressess with your buriza+sash + 100% immunity to cold and lightning thinking it was all balanced and they just had to adapt.

Yes I enjoyed that in pve, but pvp DID have unofficial rules and community for it!

Iirc it was max 25% immunity, no knockback items, certain patch items restricted and more stuff I can't remember. There were referees that used that hack so you could see others peoples gear before a fight.

I think you and your "prominent and acknowledged" players simply did not stick around long enough to let the community evolve and adapt. Which kinda goes against your main points of this entire discussion.

So I've been smashing up Median XL with my lvl 120 wyrmzon. S&E without rescuing my high value corpse and lost hours of equipment. Guess I should take it as a sign I need to stop the addiction and just wait until my spare time is swallowed by this.

never understood people who play hardcore diablo. i get the point of it, i just wouldnt want to be a victim of the randomness of the internets and Bnet as it was back in the day :/

I wonder if the game will feature any mobs like those Oblivion Knights, i remember they where an absolute horror no matter what level you where, and what game-setting you had because of their potential to one-shot melee characters. Never fun being a Barb there!

But looking through, it seems their spell Iron Maiden was removed from the game in a later patch, how disapointing.

Still i can imagine that would have been quite evil if on hardcore

Charge+ iron maiden killed my bros paladin(or some such combo).
SAcrifice killed mine.
Lag killed many.
Teleport took a few mages out.

The reason? It's heartragingly fun :D

Probably endolphins or some such in brain.

they nerfed iron maiden in the latest patches anyway, wasn't nearly as challenging after that. Vanilla D2 was pretty much a cakewalk anyways once you knew what you were doing. /players 8 median XL all the way!!!

Souls were always tough though, had to reroll maps if you got them on a baal run :)

it was fun dueling etc on hc but with the lack of world pvp in d3 I dont see much of a point to hc than epeen reasons.

Nothing to do with epeen really, it's just fun. Heart pounding, hands shaking, near deaths. I love harsh death penalties(due to the rewards it gives) and try to incorporate them in every game if not in already, so HC mode in diablo is rather the epihany.

Might find it fun due to growing up with hrash games :p

For HC, I think many players will spend a long time farming in Hell before even attempting Inferno.

Even then I doubt they'll be prepared for what lies ahead tbh, if Jay Wilson was accurate in what he said about Inferno the difficulty jump from Hell > Inferno will be insane, I can see alot of people crying on the forums "I want my character back its to hard waaa waaa" :p

what you will probably find is the majority will atleast play Inferno a few times on softcore before even attempting HC.
