Everyone will just start leeching the main networks, so newsgroups (which require payment to access) will be better.

Personally, I'm wondering if the ISPs over here will be forced to hand over our details in the same way as happened in the US?

Unfortunately there is some grounds for this in UK law, even more when the EUCD gets implemented! :(

One thing bugs me about all this. IRL, if you buy pirated software/music/films, purely for personal use, nobody is really going to bother you. Its only if you sell the stuff, or distribute it, that you get in trouble with the police.

Is this not also true of the internet? Therefore leechers will not be prosecuted?

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has said 7.4 million people in the UK are swapping songs online illegally.

So they're gonna send 7.4 million people to court/jail?

good plan!

Dam them all to hell I say. Long live free music :)

Free music won't last long when the musicians stop getting paid.

When they stop earning a popstar lifestyle, then I will start paying for music :)

Musicians get paid bugger all through CD sales anyhow, gigging is where it's at and you can't really pirate gigs, you can bootleg them like but it's not the same as being stood in teh middle of a thousand other sweaty goits in the mosh pit while the music blasts out through your head :p

Yes but imo they are way overpaid, or whoever gets the cash from all the cd sales are :D

tbh, the whole idea of filling the world with millions of plastic/metal discs is totally outdated. We have the technology to do away entirely with the packaging. Record shops could become outlets, where with a mere swipe of a special credit card, you choose from a catalogue of millions of online songs. You would then return home, and download this piece of music (or you could download it onto the card in the store), and play it back on whatever equipment you choose. It wouldn't matter if you lost the card, because a record would be kept of your transaction.

Just imagine the cost savings. No cases, no physical medium, no inserts, no transportation costs (if you ignore the electronic storage/transmission costs), no waste. That would be a significant amount of money off the cost of an album (the concept of which is fading quickly). In future, the only albums produced will be concept albums.

We all enjoy having a physical 'presence' to our music, but thinking about it, I don't ever look properly at a cd case/insert. Vinyl is another matter, but vinyl has a 'smell' and a 'texture' all of its own.

I hope that mp3 doesn't become the dominant format, hopefully for a slightly higher premium, uncompressed audio will be downloadable, for those of us who like their hifi, and their music.

This is capitalism, and they have every right to that money. Its theirs. You don't bemoan the man who becomes rich for inventing the 'must-have' household accessory.

Not all musicians are earning 'popstar wages' - And the ones that are the ones that have gajillions of teenage girls buying their singles every couple of months.

Would you be very happy if you worked your arse off to make a beautiful album, then didn't receive a penny from anyone that listened to it?

All I'm asking is, if you like an album, buy it. The artists deserve it.

Heh.. the artists don't do half bad, at least the artists who make the songs I download. They are still mega rich :)

I think you'll find thats only true of the successful bands, which are very much in the minority.

I'm not condoning piracy, but I didn't have to go and buy that new Zero 7 album. I bought it because I really like it. In my opinion, when downloading music, I'm not costing anybody anything. If I don't like it, I delete it, and I don't buy it. If I really like it, I buy it.

Its the other people who use music as a background to their lives that cost people money.

I personaly won't do that, I really don't belive music should cost so much.
However, with games I will download those and if I like them I will buy them because I feel a good game is worth its money as i'll get many many years of play out of it :)

yes as i stated once, they have a right to it, but there rich enough it shouldnt worry them a great deal that there losing a very slight amount of money compaired to what they have made/will make from just doing concerts etc
