the evidence does show that certain groups, particularly skilled workers, are a net positive to the public finances
We rarely use immigration for skilled workers though (every country competes for them). We use it to suppress wages and do unskilled jobs as cheaply as possible.

Which is why reform voters are unskilled workers who work - who've gotten pissed off that they're trying hard and are still skint. They're also pissed off at the people on benefits because they live alongside them and see them not working.

And they are pissed off with illegal immigrants because if they had a few brain cells they wouldn't be unskilled workers - they'd be skilled.

Still leaving environmental crime in the hands of the environment agency - rather than with the police, who need to lock up the organised criminals who are doing this.

Start by recording, fining and imprisoning anyone delivering and dumping waste by articulated lorry. Give them reduced sentences for fingering who paid them.

And, of course, make public tips free of charge again. Paid for by general taxation. And add a surcharge onto building materials, ringfenced for their disposal, making sure disposal is funded by the people who buy the materials in the first place.

Those found guilty should be forced to stay in a mobile prison cell, on the land they have ruined, to clean it up, until it is as they found it, even if it takes the rest of their lives.

Not all but a lot of it is travellers, when travellers roll up to a town and take over a field or car park, they go about town doing rubbish removal and rather than taking it to the tip they just dump it and rinse repeat.

There's plenty of documented cases of travellers being prosecuted for fly-tipping. I'm not saying all travellers do it, or that they're responsible for all fly-tipping. I'm saying some do, which is obviously true.

You don't need statistics showing that an entire group does something to establish that individual members of that group have done it.

Government guidance itself specifically recognises fly-tipping and excessive littering as potential problems associated with unauthorised encampments.

example

"Herefordshire Council has prosecuted individuals living on Traveller sites for fly-tipping, including a 2022 case involving waste dumped adjacent to a Traveller site."

I am not paying the off-shore tax dodging wankers at the Guardian anything, so please summarise.

And as for the dickheads on electric motorbikes, that seem to be getting more and more of a problem. I am pretty sure we can come up with something that mangles their back wheel, or shuts it down. Or, perhaps just ban their sale, except to licensed users.

No jobs and no hope because we've imported masses of cheap labour over decades and an overly-generous benefits system?

You really are drinking the Kool-Aid aren't you (yes I've noticed you increasingly linking from the Telegraph). The UK has one of the least generous benefits systems in Europe, and consistently so. And once again, no jobs, fucking move then. It's interesting how you're only right wing on populist talking points but not economic ones. I wonder why?

Funny. I linked from the torygraph twice, I think, because I've previously been 100% a guardian poster. I wondered who'd shout first.

For the record, I started (very) occasionally looking at the torygraph occasionally three whole months ago, because the grauniad really is a poisonous cesspit a lot of the time and it's probably healthier to widen out the news sources. So it was a conscious decision to broaden "news" sources. Unfortunately neither the times or the FT are amenable to paywall bypassers. (But new scientist is - and I've started reading a lot more of that again).

I find it telling though - literally thousands of grauniad links, articles etc - and a couple from the torygraph and the post police have made it known it's been noticed.

FH is a labour shop tho. So not surprising.

No jobs? Leave your family, losers.

🤷‍♂️

It IS an economic point. I've spelled out who has been hurt by our economic choice to bring in cheap unskilled labour - and it's the asshats who are rioting, voting brexit and voting reform.

Do you not think their economic circumstances are linked to the voting patterns you hate?

It's not kool-aid - it's obvious. And I made that argument - the economic argument - 12 months ago or more?

Immigration isn't harming me. I'm not in the demographic where unskilled labour is a threat. (Globalisation and the loss of white collar jobs to indoa/china/AI is more my bag - but I still don't care). I'm simply (repeatedly) making an observation until someone schools me on the error of my ways.

I'd love to see you make and argument that fits the facts and totally changes my perspective. Honestly, I really would. But I don't think you have it, or you'd have posted it already in your eloquent style...

It's not coherent argument when you claim there are no jobs and an over-generous benefits system. Neither thing is true, if you can be bothered to go and look. Like immigrants do. Middlesborough has been an employment black hole for 40 years or more, hanging around is contra-indicated, and moving doesn't mean across the world, it means down the A1.

Immigration is not the (primary) problem in Middlesborough, certainly not in the context of the current violence. Those "gangsters" are white kids from multi-generational failed families, and they were failing before the first brown face showed up, but it's easier to blame the other than face up to a very much home grown problem that crime is more attractive than GCSEs or working in a call centre.

The interesting thing is that if you take the long view, the era of most of this "class" (for want of a better word) having jobs is a brief historical interlude of about a century, before that we were transporting them or shoving them in the military, but irrespective we've always had an underclass.

And the reason why I think you're drinking the Kool-Aid is because you immediately framed this as an immigrant issue when it's far more to do with wage stagnation and deskilling of the entire economy, which, once again, predates mass immigration. Immigration isn't helping, but it's not the root cause of Britain's woes.

We're not a million miles away @DaGaffer. We should go for a pint :)

But one thing - the fact that we both moved away for economic reasons and did OK because of our willingness and ability to do so doesn't mean an economy giving immense pressure to split up family structures that humans have evolved with is fair. Poorer, less clever kids need family support. They're not always capable of taking those opportunities.

I moved away (and came back) Nearly all my friends did, to various parts of the country, half of them settling where they did their degrees, we all still meet up at least once every year. You make new social groups, perhaps not so feral. There is plenty of work done my immigrants, completely legal immigrants. Poles and Romanians doing low level jobs, and doing very well for themselves, they put the work in, these people do not, and the way it is going, neither will their children. Maybe it's time for factory towns again.

Oh, and they probably all vote Reform, too. The "You can be anything you want to be" generation(s).
