Making money is the primary focus. This level of criminality shows that water companies do not believe [regulators], or the government, will ever do anything meaningful to stop them

If Burnham fixed this, actually fixed it, I'd vote Labour next time round.

By fix, I mean create meaningful legislation that puts severe and effective criminal sanctions on water companies that forces compliance within a short time-bound period. Not looking at nationalisation - which carries significant risk that government will simply hide the problem again. More light. No self-reporting. Proper regulation.

Aside from that guff (which is shit) - there's a wider discussion here, so I'm going to throw it out: The RNLI is a charity close to my heart. I could well be the beneficiary of their services if I inadvertently get into trouble in the sea.

If I'm out in my kayak, I've taken my safety precautions, I've got my light, my whistle, my VHF radio, a fun-times flare gun, and I'm in the shit - I call the RNLI. That's what people think their job is. (Or, like the idiots I called the RNLI out for a couple of years back - they were stranded on some rocks by the cliffs because they hadn't taken a spare fuel canister for their boat ).

But these mega-dinghies. They're inherently dangerous. As is crossing one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, with 100 other people in a floating death trap. You've intentionally put yourself in that situation there. Yet the RNLI are patrolling, ready to pick you up. In many ways, they are acting as a "taxi service".

Now, I'm not suggesting that they don't. If these boats sink, then that's 100 people in the water. That's actual distress. The RNLI is just heading that off at the pass by taking the action they're taking. However, if you know you're significantly safer than face-value getting into one of those boats because those nice Brits are ready and waiting to "rescue" you then the RNLI is functionally removing barriers.


I don't know what the answer is. It's certainly not "let them drown". The low-foreheads would definitely be up for that, but not the lifeboat crews. However that's the reason they're being targetted.
