We rarely use immigration for skilled workers though (every country competes for them). We use it to suppress wages and do unskilled jobs as cheaply as possible.the evidence does show that certain groups, particularly skilled workers, are a net positive to the public finances
Which is why reform voters are unskilled workers who work - who've gotten pissed off that they're trying hard and are still skint. They're also pissed off at the people on benefits because they live alongside them and see them not working.
And they are pissed off with illegal immigrants because if they had a few brain cells they wouldn't be unskilled workers - they'd be skilled.
