Aftermarket 1070s are incredibly close to reference 1080s.

5fps or less in quite a few games ( at 4k ).

indeed. I'm concerned though...the 1080 (@caLLous  ) is a tremendous beast and really owns in poorly optimised games, aka Doom / Witcher / etc. damn...just when I was almost sold on the 1070 too. sticking in another to SLI them like I did with my 970's just doesn't have the ROI that I feel I did have with the old cards. Meeeehhhh

Just grab a 1070 and wait until they bring TI's etc out later on, price on the 1080's will likely drop a fair bit then, what I plan on doing at least.

Oh boy, Inno3D... Shit coolers, shitty factory applied thermal paste. This particular one is factory OCed, runs hot in demanding games, etc

If you had a quiet system before, this will render it noisy in full load.

Most manufacturers apply thermal paste in a shitty fashion. I doubt it's any worse than any of the others.

I wouldn't order anything from asus anymore, they're playing the RMA returns rejection goal and fucking people around.

Also there's a review of this specific card on anandtech:

Review: Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChiLL X3 - Graphics - HEXUS.net - Page 11

It runs 5 degrees hotter than the asus under load, but it's also delivering more performance, and it's about the same noise level ( quieter than reference also ).
Not too bad really.

Seeing as the cooler on the Strix 1080 is virtually the same as the Strix 980ti. The noise level is basically nothing, even under load. No load and it barely even spins at all. Amazing cooler for factory fit. (no idea about the Inno3D, never heard of them)

I usually buy ZOTAC cards, never had any bother with them before tbh, both my GTX 670 and my GTX 780 were both ZOTAC cards, both ran nice and cool, very little noise and they weren't super expensive, didn't come overclocked but not exactly hard to overclock a card in this day and age.

in other news, the new AMD CPU's are rumoured to be pretty good, rumours say on par with a 6700k.

Nah. It's quiet and fast according to reviews. Decent price too comparatively.

So, overclockers just e-mailed 480's from £175.99. Not sure I should have stuck with NVidia now, that's fucking cheap.

That's the 4gb version. The 8gb is £220-£240 depending on manufacturer...still nice and cheap though, depending on benchmarks.

Benches are out.
In DX11 it's similar to the 970 - wins on some, loses on others. Generally very close.
In DX12 it smokes the 970 ( BF1, rise of the tomb raider, hitman ).

Other benefits: 250w under load, vs 300w of the 970 and 350w on the 390.
Freesync over HDMI now - not just dp, also supports dp1.3 and 1.4

Basically the same performance as a 390, but a lot cheaper, with a few marginal benefits.

It's not a 1070, but at half the price, for 60-80% of the performance depending in the game - it's definitely the new $/performance king.
That said, if you wanna game at 1440p or above you really want the 1070.
For 1080p this is the new budget king.

Meh. I've spludged my £580 now. No point in what-iffing :)

(Should arrive Friday... New Monitor is already here but no DVI input so can't use it yet.)

I'm going to take the risk and it'll likely backfire, shall order 2x 480's.

edit: actually no I'm not, just read a review from someone that did and it didn't work out too well for him :p I don't game at 1440p though so a single 480 should work for awhile.

For the record, the 4 GB version actually has 8 GB of VRAM on it, it's just BIOS-locked to 4. One of the reviewers (mentioned in this video somewhere) was actually sent one card and a separate BIOS for each memory configuration. It made it much cheaper to produce because they only had to concentrate on one PCB. I wouldn't be surprised if those 4 GB ones could be unlocked to 8 GB.

480s in crossfire are apparently destroying 1080s.

480s in crossfire are apparently destroying 1080s.

Depends entirely on the game.
Fallout 4 for example, crossfire 480s were worse than a single 480 - at 1080p, but much better at 4k.

Also the card has a power issue right now - it's drawing more than it should from the pcie and putting more through the motherboard than it should.
Crossfire is a dangerous game with these cards right now.

8pin AIBs should be a lot better than the reference 6pins for it though.
If 8pin AIBs fix this, I might be up for a crossfire setup again.
