If he's out for the duration then I think they can still get Dawson out to South Africa; so long as its before the tournament proper starts I think that's allowed. In which case it will probably Carragher as first choice CB.

Yes your right - "Should a player be ruled out of the tournament before it begins, a replacement can be drafted into the 23-man squad as happened in 2002 when England midfielder Danny Murphy broke a bone in his foot and Trevor Sinclair was called up." (from beeb article).

Huh - are you a 2nd languange english speaker then?

I used past tense because his decision to take Barry was made in the past.

Edit -uh-oh there goes Rio.

It would be a mistake if he was taken to the tournament and was shite. It wouldn't be if he has a good tournament.

It's not that hard to grasp.

Yeah, Rio is injured and most likely out the tournament altogether according to reports.

Dawson has been phoned by the FA and is officially on standby to fly out there.

I think Carragher-Terry might work, but got a sneaking suspicion that Capello will plump for King.

If it is Carra then Johnson'll have to be on his toes against the fastest opposition.

And now Drogba has a fractured elbow! Dropping like flies today.

Shame really, I was just about to put in my sweepstake form and I had Ivory Coast to go through ahead of Portugal. May revise that now.

Fucking donkey, ah well there goes our defence, Ledley can fill in, but not two games in a row. Dawson has youth on his side but not enough experience, and Carragher can't turn or run.

To be fair to Heskey it wasnt supposed to have been a bad tackle - I think it just shows he wasnt really fit - he has had an injury plagued year.

Yeah with his back, not his knees. He came through two friendlies fine. It may have been a fluke, but it still justifies my point that Heskey should not have been in the squad :)

Only blinkered Liverpool fans have not noticed, the guys lost any pace he once possessed, and increasingly relies on fouls to defend. Ever since Hypia left Liverpool, Carragher has been shown up for a lesser defender. Hypia made him look like a part of a very good defence, when in reality Hypia was mainly covering for Carraghers mistakes.

God Hypia was a great player.

I like the heart Carra has but not much else, his bright red face worries me :(

Well he can't really start with Dawson since he was clearly last choice CB. So it's either gonna be JT and Carragher or JT and King.

Which means we are fucked for pace at the back in the centre of the park, with Johnson constantly getting caught out of position at right back our Centre halves are going to be dragged all over the gaff!

Just you wait, it's going to get 100x worse. Large competitions are entirely reliant on advertising for funding these days. Of course, if the competitions wernt so bogged down with bullshit, the costs would be far lower and our poor eyes might be spared.

Remember the mastercard bullshit where you could only buy tickets with one? Fucking disgraceful. Expect to only be able to buy coke or bud at stadium bars, too :(

Now Mikel is out. If one more English-based player goes out I guarantee the next news story will be "Call for Premiership numbers to be reduced as English teams play too many games".

I've not read this read so apologies if this is a glen (plus I didn't want to start a new thread), but EEEEEEEEEEVERY FUCKING COMPETITION:

"new ball moves too quickly"

"new ball curves too easily"

"new ball challenges goalkeepers more than ever"

"new ball means England still won't win"

EVERY YEAR... but this year I thought to myself "nah, they won't surely run yet another moan-about-the-ball news story", BUT ALAS IT'S HERE!

BBC News - Engineers defend World Cup football amid criticism

Edit: I say every year, I mean every year there is a major competition.

Mikel's been out for ages. And we play the same number of games as all the other teams in major European countries so don't know where you're getting that nonsense from. The main difference is we don't have a winter break.

I can understand why this year.

Imagine what Ronaldo might be able to do with that ball.
