Everyone agrees with that but it is the only way they can force people to write metro based applications which they need to gain market share with the Surface. It does not matter how many of the xxx copies of windows 8 use start 8 or similar they can just quote xxx devices running metro so please develop applications.

whats the best way of turning the iso file into a boot stick, or can we re-download it with other option?

There is a link to re download it in your confirmation email. One of the options on the download is to save to USB or ISO or DVD.

I just noticed that Windows 8 comes with Anti Virus from minute one. Windows Defender seems to be MSE now. A great idea in my books but if they carry on I can see another cunting browser choice style Window in our future.

Possible. MSE isn't the best but it's more than adequate for the needs of someone who *already knows what they're doing*. It's better than anything with a Norton/Symantec or Mcafee badge on it, and certainly better than Sophos. (It, in it's corporate guise tackled our first virus last week at work removing one of those fake Police warning nasties which is usually an utter cunt to clean).
If it stops people throwing money at twats like Symantec then I'm all for it, however as you say no doubt it'll upset some morons further down the line and invoke another lawsuit dodging choice window. It would be harder for anyone to quantify a need to have AV separate in this day and age though - the OS should be "more secure" by default and this ticks the boxes.

I don't think they'll go for that in this case, it can be turned off, IE couldn't.

So that is why Windows 8 does not have the choice window as it can be removed now?

Not sure, I'd imagine its because Windows 8 has been released after all the prior stupidness and things have changed.

And all the virus makes will have a fucking field day when so many nubs use the same AV.

The second virus makers finds a flaw in that AV all hell is going to break lose and Microsoft is gonna have a humongous problem on their hand.

That's no different to how it already is, there's no "going to" about it. Doesn't just relate to AV software too, that's software in general. One of the many reasons Java can FOAD.

i have been using Win8 on my desktop since it had no OS when i got it and i get a free copy from uni :)

I like it, actually feels a little weird when using Win7 machines (and XP at work!) and being forced to use the start button o_O

Or made to include a Browser Choice.

And if the got charged that much for Windows 7 SP1 breaking the browser choice how much will not including it in Windows 8 cost them.

Fucking ouch. M$ should be asking when Apple are going to be charged a fortune like that.

The reality is they've never represented so much of the market compared to MS.

Should not matter really Apple force you to use Safari Google force you to use Chrome. Just because M$ are a bigger company it should not mean they can get punished like this for something that is common practice on all platforms.

The whole thing is just a money spinner for the EU.

Anyone can install another browser just most people don't give a fuck and use whatever comes with the device.

It is what makes it a monopoly, plus it forgets that the agreement they broke was one related to practices from many years ago.

I've had to downgrade my gaming PC back to windows 7. I just got fed up with most of my slightly older games not working. Now I can play Operation Flashpoint again Dragon Rising for instance. I do now have a win 8 touchscreen PC for the lounge that works well enough for t'internet and office stuff and it is very intuitive and tablety so in that context is ok. The wife uses it mainly for mahjong and t'other similar stuff.

If anything that works in 7 doesn't work in your 8, then your install of 8 is broken. The NT kernel is near identical.

You're the first person I've found that still uses the start menu like that. Everyone else I talk to just presses Start then types a few characters and presses return. Not saying it's a bad thing - just interesting :)

edit: I'm only talking about things I do less often, for frequent things I have a tile - for frequent things in Win7 I used to have them pinned to the top of the start menu.

I work as an IT Analyst, and I use the start menu in exactly the same way as Scouse. Have done since Win95.

And supporting over 2,500 users the vast majority of whom still use it that way too, you may be more wrong than you'd think ;)

The Win8 experience is a massive dichotomous retrograde step in usability terms. I literally shudder in fear at the thought of in being deployed in a corporate environment.

Ick.

While I agree it is different and most people are used to clicking it is not that much of a change. You can still use the mouse after pressing start on the keyboard. It is actually a lot faster now windows is quicker at matching your search to applications. I really like it now and prefer it to 8 with a fake start button.
