I've heard as many theories on what makes a good whiskey, as there are "Whiskey specialists". Some guru's say that you should never use water, some say that you should use a drip of water to get the flavor going, and others say that ice is the way to go.

Some say that the single malt is best, and others don't.

It all comes down to 1 thing: Personal Preference. Drink the whiskey as you like it, and don't let any of those so-called professionals ruin it. As for my personal preference... I generally don't like single malts at all. My favorite whiskey is Chivas Regal, has a nice flavored taste, and doesn't taste like rubbing alcohol.

[edit] bah, outdated answer, due to me not seeing page 2 & 3, and not checking dates :p

´very much agree on what your saying about personal taste,
hell if someone wanted to use a 30yo for whisky & coke, well so be it,
after all he/she paid for it..so who are we to tell them what to do with it.

once that said, adding a drop of water to cask strength whisky or in general "fat" whisky aka oily..will ulter the whisky quite significantly.

as for ice, well as a rule of thumb, it will do the exact opposite of what a drop of water will do.

ps: for those intrested:

So CornZoks,'

I finally got around to that
pink new spirit,

it's ok'ish,
but I must admit the pure spirit was definatly better,
seems I'm not much for red-wine casks when it comes to whisky not as primary cask nor as finishes, all though, rather a prime cask than a finish...

never the less I'll cap off the evening with a good ol' cask strength peated arran,
just to take away that toothpastie notes this pink stuff left behind
