Harsh tasting rubbish, comparing it to a half decent single Irish around the same price is like comparing night and day. JD is overrated crap that sells well because they have a brand and advertise it well. I would rather drink Jim Beam than that horrible JD crap if I had to drink bourbon.

I think Jim Beam tastes bloody awful unless it's the black label stuff.

Also I can't stand Irish, i'm a scotch man! :)

I've been gagging to get myself another bottle of Glenlivet lately, that stuff's fucking lovely - Or Chivas Regal.

a decent scot single malt owns all for drinking on its own.

Nope not for me, I will take a decent Irish single pretty much every time over a Scottish single. Smoother and a fuller flavour because of the way they distill it.

I'm not the biggest shot drinker but my Dad is a Scott so most of the stuff in the house is Scottish. The Speyside single malts are more full of flavor so trying to go one of them might be worth a go. All the sherry cask stuff are meant to have a really nice flavor and be perfect for drinking neat.

Laphroaig (15 yr)

I got gifted a 10yr during the weekend. it's smoother than I thought it would be, but the Islay peat is very strong. How's the 15 compare?

Yep the Spayside and the Islay malts are by far the best from Scotland, there is some pleasent drinking to be done with those. I have always preferred an Irish though but as you pointed out about your dad being a Scot well I grew up in an Irish family where there was always Glenfiddich, Teachers, Powers and Jameson around the place and the Scottish blends are horrific compared to the Irish so that slanted my views somewhat. As I grew older I was able to afford the better stuff but the Irish malts always suited my pallete much more and I have found them much smoother to drink as well.

Getting back to the JD thing, even though technically it isn't a bourbon it pretty much is as they make it from corn mash. If I have to drink any of that bourbon crap then I prefer the Jim Beam (black as someone pointed out above tastes nicer because of it's age) which is a true bourbon and is aged a bit longer that the normal stuff plus it has a higher proof rating. In all honesty though I can go to Aldi and buy a half decent Irish single for around a tenner and it is fifty times better. Bourbon is just so popular because the yanks make it and they love anything they make so much they think nothing can possibly be better. You will find that cultured and wealthy Americans drink Irish and Scottish singles, they just want to drink the best thier money can buy and are not blinded by the patriotic posturing of the bourbon industry.

The Japanese make some pretty good single malts these days it seems as well, never seen one in a U.K. shop yet though sadly.

Anyone tried the Highland Park 18? I have been reading some rave reviews on that and it has won the 'Best Spirit in the World' award, I haven't come across it in the shops before but I might have to search some out if it is reasonably affordable.

yes, I have the 18 in my house atm, and it's smashing imo. also almost surprisingly affordable, as you say. I paid more for a bottle of 16yr a few years ago.

well, yes, I was pleasently surprised tbh. it's quite robust though imo, the peat flavour is immense, compared to what I'm used to.

B2 had whiskey and milk last night, and when i started singing the Dr Feelgood song he was like wtf you on about???
Yeah regularly use milk as a mixer, normally for Jamesons, wouldn't do so if splashing out alot on whiskey unless really got sick of it neat. Dunno if it's the done thing, peeps use it for Hot Toddys, so why not cold.

Hah, and yeah the Dr Feelgood song rocks.

Can't get a taste for the peatier whiskys, Irish and the lowland scots ones here, but no connoisseur on the stuff for sure. Just wash it down with Guinness chasers, is spot on, moderate your speed of decent.
