The Lost Legion - Valerio Massimo Manfredi.

For some reason I am hooked completely on books about the Roman Empire. Recently I bought every book by Simon Scarrow to read and didn't stop for a few weeks as I was so hooked on them.

like wise xD whats the lost legion about? what time period? Ceasar or later?

Onto Anansi now. I liked it even more than AG.

Also, the Sandman graphic novels are rly good.

Can't say myself, i think i prefer AG over AB. The protagonist is much better in AG, even if AB is a lot more lighthearted.

Read Treasure Island this week and then started Frankenstein which I have just finished.

Having read neither before I found Treasure Island to be very enjoyable and nothing like what I had envisaged, apart from the island, the pirates and the treasure of course :p

I found Frankenstein in parts as equally enjoyable as the above, overall though I got a bit bored of the constant whining from Frankentein and his monster. I do believe they were emo's! ;)

Currently reading Codex Alera by Jim Butcher. For a series which started with "lost roman legion" and "pokemon" it's actually really cool. I'd recommend it to anyone tired of the same old medieval England setting.

Also they use badgers the size of minibuses as mounts.

I read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer on Sat/Sunday and I am currently whirling my way through The Adventures of Huck Finn.

Both books have been really enjoyable!!!!!!

The Great Gatsby started today, about time I read it.
Wouldn't bother personally, "great" is imho a very early form of marketing ploy.

Still, it's an important book and it does have a lot of literary merit. Quite enjoying some of it.

I'm reading A Clash of Kings. I love it, just not as much as A Game of Thrones yet.

It's not nearly as exciting as the first book but it sets up a lot of dominoes to be knocked down in the third which makes it totally worthwhile as compared to the fourth book which is just plain dull. If there would ever be a fifth book it might be redeemed but chances are higher every member of this forum will win the lottery than that happening :(

Just finished Walter Tevis's most excellent The Man Who Fell to Earth. A reviewer sums it as sci-fi, political satire and Biblical allegory: http://amzn.to/fuipNo

Well it took 3 years but finally finished the Lord of the Rings, and what a pile of shite it was.
Only good thing about was the bits with the hobbits, which funnily enough i hated in the film. Guess it's one to chalk of the list of things to do.

About to start on A Song of Fire and Ice - A Game of Thrones

Absolutely LOVE Jack vance's writing. The Dying Earth stories of Rhialto nad Cugel are great and his Lyonesse trilogy is superb as well

just read Neverwhere and American Gods by Neil Gaiman

What did you think of American Gods? For the most part I enjoyed it, but I did spend a lot of time looking up the all the gods that appeared in the story.

Started Use of Weapons the other day by Iain M Banks. Really enjoying it but it has the same problem that so much SciFi stuff has - SILLY FUCKING NAMES. Ugh, are they absolutely necessary? Some bird called Diziet Sma. An attack droid called Skaffen Amitiskaw. Really? GAH.

Oh and... OMG LEGGY HAI!

tbh I felt it was a bit patchy here and there. that is to say: I loved the gods, sprites, geegaws, doodads and whatnot with their different personalities, hangups, etc, and the spin put on the belief and worshipping systems. I liked Shadow, even though he was just too bad-ass imo. I liked the overall spin of the story, old vs new, with the trickery behind that.

thing is, I guess I shouldn't have read it back to back with Neverwhere. I thought NW was great, and loved the dark fairytale vibe of it, I thought AG was less good mostly because of Shadow being too (mentally) tough and perhaps a bit blasé about what happened and continue to happen to him throughout the unfolding of the story, especially his interaction with the people he met. The only time I felt he was doing something beyond him was when he was in the tree.

and wb dude, good to see you in these parts again :)

Highly recommend some Haruki Murakami... any of his books, but I certainly enjoyed Dance dance dance and Kafka on the Shore

Currently reading the fourth Codex Alera book by Jim Butcher. It's starting to pick up speed now and I'm really excited to see where he goes with the characters, most of whom are really, really interesting. I very much like how the politics of the book forces characters together, despite their mutual hatred of eachother. Heroes working with the villains they know to be guilty of a crime, but they can't prove, going in knowing they'll be betrayed at one point and having to plan for it is quite exciting.

The setting itself has also grown on me, I was indifferent at first to the Roman-fantasy thing but it's worked out surprisingly well, so well in fact I don't know why nobody else has tried before(to my knowledge.)

There's 4? I just finished the second one and thought it was the most recent for some reason

Currently reading The Heroes by Joe Abercombie. As good as usual :)

Edit, just checked and there's 6 lol. That's one less series I'm waiting to be drip fed!

Speaking of which - Wise Man's Fear next month, everything else is getting dropped when I get my hands on that

Yep there's 6 books in the series, it's actually considered complete and the author is moving on to Sci-Fi next.

Heroes is next for me, looking forward to it - I love Abercrombies style, which reminds me - Scott Lynch anyone read him? He's supposed to be similar to Abercrombie in style. Sadly it seems he is something of a GRRM with his books, that is to say Jesus being reborn is more likely than another release.

I loved The first Locke Lamorra book, great characters, setting and story even if the constant flashbacks got annoying. Red seas under red skies was enjoyable but imo not as good, took a long time to go anywhere.

Looking forward to Republic of thieves though, but no idea why it's been so long since his last release and if that'll be the norm for the rest.
