I love Feist. Grew up on his books, but wish he'd do something that wasn't Midkemia re-hash.

Currently reading The Man in the High Castle... Axis powers win WW2...

Just finished Way of Kings, by Brandon Sanderson and thought it was one of the best books I've read in a long time

A rather large book and not the fastest pacing but the characters and world building is top class - I just found it incredibly readable.

Pity he's had to delay the next in the series cos he's working on the Wheel of time books :/

I wouldn't worry too much, Sanderson is a machine. Way of Kings is his 9th book in the last 5 years and he plans on finishing the last Wheel of Time book late 2011. After that it should be smooth sailing.

If you liked it I would recommend his other series Mistborn, a bit faster pacing perhaps but it has a lot of cool moments.

I'm debating between reading the Liveship trilogy next or Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie, I'm leaning towards Best Served mostly because naval fantasy seems a bit odd and I loved the First Law trilogy.

.

I picked up his trilogy for my hospital visit and when I was paying the guy was telling me what an awesome choice I had made.

They are the only 3 books I have read in my life where I didn't get any sadness/joy as I turned the last page. Very difficult to explain really, it might well be your thing.

If you love fantasy go and get In the Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss it will blow you away, plus the second book is out in January!! I can't speak highly enough of the book, brilliant debut fantasy novel and in my opinion (although it's hard to type this) better than my beloved Gemmell :(

Very closely behind the book above and another I read last year was The Left Hand of God by Paul Hoffman, another book after finishing I was devastated to discover I had to wait for over a year to get the next sitting.

Currently reliving my Gemmell days from start to finish and I am on page one of Hero in the Shadows (book 3 of the Waylander Trilogy)

Yeah I read the Mistborn series last year - I liked it a lot but I thought WoK was better

QFT.

Though I think March/april for book 2, he's only just submitted his final draft.

It's on my to-read-list, I've begun the Liveship books - figured I'd save Best Served Cold until the next book is out soon-ish.

Decided to take a break from Liveship after the first book and instead try The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

Three books in so far and it's really quite entertaining. It sort of uses the normal cop procedural TV show thing, but instead of a writer or a forensic specialist the police uses a wizard. The real thing, though not many believe him. The characters so far have been fairly interesting, especially Dresden himself with his dark past - which leads him into isolation, unless there's a damsel in distress(he can't resist trying to save those, despite how much trouble they get him into). The villains are at some level perhaps a bit comic-booky, but perhaps that's justified in how scary otherworldy creatures are.

What I really like about the series so far though is the writing itself, it's very fast paced but it never fails to explain motivations or details despite its relatively short length(300 pages or so per book). There's also quite alot of humour, the main hero himself is a textbook example of a Deadpan Snarker and seems to be very fond of gallows humour in dire situations or when he's just taking the piss(like going to a Vampire Masquerade Ball dressed as a....cheesy vampire).

All in all I'd recommend them, they are quite different from normal fantasy, it's actually sort of like a grown up Harry Potter - though magic is infinitely more complex and time consuming here.

If you like the Dresden Files you should definitely try Charles Stross' laundry series (Atrocity Archives etc.), ploughs similar territory but better written imho.

Just finished China Mieville's The Scar, which wasn't bad, and I'm just about to read Stephen Baxter's Stone Spring on Kindle. Just got a mail from Amazon saying the latest Scott Lynch book The Republic of Thieves is out in a couple of weeks, but it looks like its hardback only (no download), so I may wait a while.

The Painted Man (The Demon Trilogy part 1) Peter V. Brett (finished)

The Desert Spear (The Demon Trilogy part 2)

Bought these last week and couldn't put the first one down, very interesting characters and a great story to go with them. I am just about to finish the second one and I am already gutted I have to wait until 2012 for the final part :(

I love that book!

Currently reading Emperor: Gates of Rome .... fiction about Julius Ceasars childhood.

by conn iguleden?

4 books in that series are really really entretaining but not overly factual

the best series on rome interest/historic wise is the master of rome by coleen mccullough, starts off with gais marius' rise to power and cornelius sulla's youth and rise all the way through to ceasar augustus the first emporer of rome book 3-4 are about early julius ceasar and book 5 and 6 are about his achievements and rule

first man in rome
grass crown
fortunes favriots
ceasars women
ceaser
the october horse
anthony and cleopatra

very rich in detail and very historicly accurate

conn iguldens are more entertaining tho imo and his portrayal of marcus brutus is epic tho the complete opposite of how brutus acctually was

also if u like his writing style try the conquerer series (lords of the bow, bones of the hill and wolves of the plain o somthing i think thier called) all about ghengis khan and his childhood through too death, 3 books atm but he's doing a 4th atm about koobla khan and the invasion on china

Great series, you won't be disappointed, especially when Julius grows up and heads off on his adventures.

Just started Daggerspell by Katharine Kerr. Characters seem a bit angsty and it doesn't have the grit of more modern fantasy, but it has a lovely Celtic setting.

I love that book!

Loved Parts 1 & 2, felt Part 3 was too far removed from the rest of the novel. Too much of what makes 1 & 2 good was dropped in favour of forcing the point home about humanity and cyclical violence. Part 3 feels like it belongs to a different story and novel tbh.

Really let down, as 1 & 2 were EXCELLENT.

The Lost Legion - Valerio Massimo Manfredi.

For some reason I am hooked completely on books about the Roman Empire. Recently I bought every book by Simon Scarrow to read and didn't stop for a few weeks as I was so hooked on them.

My fave Manfredi book is Tyrant.

You're not the only one though, for some reason, books set in ancient Greece and Rome are fascinating and I lap it up.

Finished the most recent Dresden Files book and I enjoyed it, except for the ending. Up until now they've all been sort of self-contained stories but this one ended in a cliffhanger and it's fairly annoying having to wait until June for a resolution :p

Next up, Codex Alera also by Jim Butcher. It seems to be fantasy heavily inspired by the Roman Empire, could be fun.
