Anyone read The Painted Man Series? I only managed to find the first one here in Qatar and wondering what the rest of the series is like.

Ive read The desert Spear.

Clearly not as good as the first one. Afraid the series will decay after this one. Better if the author just release a 3rd and last book to close the story.

Who knows any good/decent irish sci fi and or fantasy writers?

I have been invited to go to a sci fi / fantasy weekend in Ireland and then realized I have no clue who the guest speakers are and who are good irish writers in scifi/fantasy genre.
I do read a lot so maybe some sneaked in :)

Eoin Colfer, Harry Harrison (Irish citizen now I think), Pat Mills, Garth Ennis (NI).

Depends on your definition of good/decent, but Anne McCaffrey is Irish. Anything to do with the Dragons of Pern books are hers.

So Covenent, Against All Things Ending: I thought that this was the last book of the series, but apparently not. Quite engrossing, but it's a writing style you have to get used to. Lots of talk about emotion and second guessing what people are saying or thinking - even more so than in previous books in the series. It is set up for a cracking finale in the last book.

Towers of Midnight: Fuck, that was very good. Anyone who gave up the series before Jordan passed away should come back to it. I really don't think I can wait a year for the next book - there seems to be so much left to resolve, it's going to have to be a monster of a book.

Towers of midnight was fantastic. Can't wait for the final volume.

Now reading naked heat by "Richard Castle". The first was so awfully readable, and funny, I hope this is similar!

Meant to post about towers of midnight, it was good.
It felt like the tower of ghenjai bit was a little too fast but overall the pacing was good.

If RJ was still writing these we'd be going to book 20 on the same amount of plot progression imo :p

The mat comedy stuff is so good ( the letter was great ), although overall I liked RJs Mat comedy style a bit more.

Ironically ECA, Robert Jordan wrote the entire Tower of Ghenjei sequence :p

I think the books wouldn't be that different if Jordan were writing them, the prior books were needed to set up the last ones. The reason they are moving along faster now is because characters are finally getting together again after being seperated for years, less need for extra points of views etc.

I did expect a lot more from Ghenjei, but I'm glad we had more of everyone else's plot and the Ghloam story with Mat instead. The Black Tower stuff was very teasing, as was the limited Seanchan plot. Perrin's storylines used to annoy me for some reason, but he really came to the fore in the last two books.

I agree that Verin's letter was funny, but tragic at the same time. I can see Mat beating himself about that one for a long time.

i'm reading, internal combustion engine fundamentals. It's got a terrific plot line and some amazing twists and subplots. Yet to reach the end, but can't wait to see how it pans out :)

I'm reading What You See Is What You Get - Alan Sugar. He's a bit up himself and the book is a bit padded out, but it is quite interesting none the less.

He was an excellent author. I have read all of his stuff. It is a master class in the genre, especially the Drenai chronicles.

i'd recommend, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. The book is better than the movie portrays it. Even though the movie was good, this was better.

Just finished "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"

Can't speak highly enough of it, I could not put it down. Before I continue that trilogy I'm going to read Gaffer's suggestion; the blurb for it makes it sound insane.

I read the trilogy recently - excellent books, very well written.

I've started reading yet another fantasy series(surprise!) this time the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb. I must say that it's refreshing to see fantasy written in 1st person. It makes a nice break from Wheel of Times 30 different points of views.

The characters are also nice, if abit on the shallow side in some cases. The villains have understandable motives but aren't clearly defined(note that I do not include the raiders in the "villains" part).

The overarching story seems very much in the background so far, but it seems to have picked up recently(middle of book 2).

I'd recommend it to any fans of the genre, especially if you prefer character instead of worldbuilding.

I'm currently reading 'The Hobbit'. Must be 30 years since I last read it, and now I'm reading it to my daughter and she is loving it as much as I did. Except at about 1/2 way through now she asked me 'are there any female characters in this book?' Er I don't know, I can't remember any.

Just had to read "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, for my English course at college. Not the kind of thing I'd normally go for, but I actually quite enjoyed it.

I really like that series, the liveship trilogy after it was a bit boring though but the final Fools trilogy was great

Fitz is an excellent character though :)

Abit on the very, depressive hero side though, up until the very end of the last book all he seems to get for his efforts is shit. I didn't actually know that the story continued in The Tawny Man trilogy at first and just sat there wondering how sadistic you had to be to end a series like Hobb did the Farseer trilogy. It seems almost like she got off on being cruel to the main character.

Very glad he got to re-unite with Patience in the end though, she was by far my favourite character. It's rare that I've seen eccentricity done right but Patience nailed it.

I'm debating between reading the Liveship trilogy next or Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie, I'm leaning towards Best Served mostly because naval fantasy seems a bit odd and I loved the First Law trilogy.

On something sort of related: has anyone read Guy Gavriel Kay? I've got a few recommendations to read it, and especially Tigana but I'd like a few more opinions before buying them.
