I have my first driving lesson on Thursday. Anyone due to be in the Oxfordshire area between the hours of 12:45 and 13:45 on Thursday would be advised to avoid any cars with an L plate on.

I had my first lesson about a month or two ago and it ain't that bad. You will stall the car but make sure you don't panic or get flustered. Just calmly re-start the car and try again.

ps if you don't stall the car then well done I'm still stalling it now (just not as much)

I started driving in March this year and am now waiting happily to sit my test. Learning to drive is a piece of piss, if i can do it anyone can (the ppl that know me will know wot i mean). Theory test is laughably easy. Not too happy about new bit getting added to practical test, all this looking under the bonnet stuff doesn't sound good.

When you first start, assuming you've never been in a car before, they give you a load of bollocks on how to not stall etc.

Simple way: rev to 2000 and keep it above there, then let the clutch off really slow.

So much easier and less bollockmongering than

*press the accelerator down and then let the clutch off until you can feel the biting point blah blah blah bollocks*

Now thats the kind of attitude that scares me. I've been driving for 14 years and I'm still learning. I bet Icemaiden will be happily belting down 30mph roads past schools doing 45mph, thinking 'this is piss!'. I wonder how long it will take him to forget to signal when pulling out, use mirrors when lane changing, stopping distances, etc.

The worst one, and I see people doing it all the time, is waiting to turn right at a junction, with your wheels already turned in the direction you want to go. Very dangerous.

I'd have thought 'maiden' would be a pretty good indication.

I passed on my 4th attempt. I couldn't be bothered to practice much until the 4th one when I was bored of it so actually tried properly and passed.

Amusing though as it all goes out of the window as soon as you get out of the test centre.

Had 7 cars and 4 bikes, trashed them all. A couple weren't my fault but most were :)

I wouldn't say i was a careless driver - all i meant by "piece of piss" is that it's nothing to be daunted by ie don't get stressed you'll get the hang of it etc. I doubt very much i'd be driving carelessly past schools etc, i have 2 young kids of my own and nothing scares me more than the thought of hitting a child with my car or anyone else for that matter.

Just to clear that up..

Took me 7 attempts to pass my test :(

Its was mostly nerves, for the last attempt I had some of this natural calming stuff (can't think what its called, it comes in little bottles with a dropper) and did the 7th one no problems \o/

I would consider myself a pretty good driver, not exceptional but not attrocious either :)

Its mostly when I'm driving around places I don't know, like when I turned off the motorway at 70mph into a little chef only to realise there wasn't a slip road and had to come to an emergency ABS utilising stop :D

When you get your own car it makes it so much easier! Instead of checking for clutch bites and turning the steering wheel so many times it becomes an automatic reaction your legs exert the right amount of pressure at the right time etc...

7? hehe. I used to have that calming stuff when i was about 12 and had to go to the dentist.

The first factor of driving is if you fall in to the 'boy racer' category

If you do you think it’s cool and hard to drive round at crazy speeds and lean forward with your windows down and system up. I think the most annoying thing is that some girls seem to like this but fortunately these are the same girls that get their tits out in Max Power and therefore I will never have the pleasure of meeting them.

My point you ask? erm there aint one apart from boy racers are gay or something but that’s not really relevant.

I passed on my 3rd attempt.

The guy failed me for apparantly driving over the solid white line that runs down the middle of the road....cant say I noticed that.

2nd attempt I was at a set of traffic lights to turn right and slowly pulled off into the intersection and stopped as there was a car coming. Next thing the guy 2 cars behind smashes into the guy behind me and pushes him into me!! And I get failed for being involved in an accident that wasnt my fault!!!

3rd attempt passed it with no problems at all. :)

Took me 4 times to pass, and tbh my driving skill hadn't actually improved in the meantime, it's just quite hard to get through if your a bloke. They have quotas on the pass rate, and if you get your test later on in the week, youre more likely to fall vicitim to it. imo.

And Mr.Monkey means I'm a him. Or DOES it???!?!?!?!?!:m00:?!???!?

They always say there are no qoutas.....

I passed third time, with my 2nd attempt resulting in a fail because some dick head ran out in front of me and I was forced to stop.

Apparently I didnt give the car behind adequate warning

Yeah so when someone runs out in front of me, next time i'll have a cup of tea and a chat over lunch with the bloke behind before braking so I don't stop about a foot from this wang and nearly smash into him.

My sister got failed for a similar thing.. she was driving along and a kid ran out in front of her car and she slammed on the brakes. The test guy failed her because she didn't check her mirrors properly before stopping.

I passed first time, 8 lessons (12 hours) no practicing in between. I've been driving for 11 years now, one accident on ice when I was 18. No points on my license. I've owned various lairy machines too, pick up truck (the crashee car), souped up mini, 200BHP RS Turbo. Just remember to take it fairly easy, and drive to the conditions and the location. If you do want to dive like a nutter, go karting or to track days.

As far as learning/test passing is concerned, It's all about relaxation, and concentration. You will make mistakes if you are too wound up about it all, and equally if you're not concentrating you will make stooooooopid mistakes.

Good Luck mank, and try to enjoy it.

Gumbo is spot on, if you get wound up you'll fail. Try to think - "If I fail so what - just try again". Second time around you'll know the routine and feel a lot more confident (if you don't pass first time that is).

You can't really lose as it will be good experience whatever.

I sit my test in about 4 weeks ish. The thought of failing is enough to make me cry, simply because of the cost. If i fail it's another 10weeks of lessons(waiting time in my area) and of course the booking fee etc. So far this whole thing has cost me well over £1500, the thought of having to spend anouth £300 just doesn't go down well at all.
