And this is what my concern is @Wij

You may give a fuck, I give a fuck, but does our Government? Nah, financial interests > Ukrainian people. Same shit for the Ukrainian Government, do they actually represent the people's interests?

I mean do you remember the last time we said 'but they love democracy!!!'? The Taliban had a walk in the park.

If they didn't they would be voted out because it's a democracy.

This isn't a both sides thing. Russia is proclaiming that Ukraine shouldn't exist and sending in tanks. The West is implementing weak sanctions.

Red-rose lefties & MAGA isolationists: FUCKING WARMONGERING WEST !!!

I think the whole 'well they voted for them' is a pretty weak argument, again see Afghanistan, another example of where we've shoe horned in democracy and thinking they'll understand it.

I'm all for punishing the shit out of Russia, and it's funny that you say it's not about sides, because you clearly perceive my arguments as Putin apologist or something, when I'm not.

I'm just sceptical about the 'truth' on both sides, and as tensions worsen those truths become even more distorted.

I watched Putin's speech, I didn't really care about the content, because he could have said anything. I cared more about how he presented himself; as the angry strongman the Russians love.

I don't think the very little our Government is doing should be applauded.

Why aren't we doing more? £

It's almost like Putin knows that we won't do anything and that could risk our relationship with the US, imagine that, Putin creating a rift between Europe and America, it's almost like it's what he's actually trying to achieve.

More to come they say, i doubt he'll escape it if they're going balls to the walls on the rich knobheads.

Only one of those Oligarchs is a big "player" and only one of those banks is in the Russian top 10. This is a very small start.

Take away all property, assets and money owned by the pricks, keep it in trust for a year and tell them, sort your shit out, or we sell it all and use the money for something useful. Up to and including football clubs.

For a start...

It won't happen though, there's too much interest in it, it would be the way to cripple them, but shooting ourselves in the foot in the process, it's just a non-starter.

I'd love to see the US do their Cuba embargo - if you trade with Russia, we don't trade with you, simples.

But again, will never happen, because we* don't actually care.

*governments.

Ukraine has been a democracy for decades. They understand it. Kind of patronising to think they can’t handle it.

Haven't they had a Russian style of democracy for decades?

Not even close to the point.

They are a sovereign nation, they should pick and chose their leaders, they should not be allowed to be invaded "just because they have been a bit shady in the past"

I can't even get my head around your logic.

Where did I say they should be invaded?

Again, words are being put in my mouth because you can't accept that I don't fully accept the Western narrative.

Not at all. In Russian-style democracies like Belarus and Kazakhstan the party in power is never voted out of office or refuses to go if they are. Ukraine has had power transfer to the opposition party time after time.

Seriously, try to know something about a situation before spouting off.

I reckon the Tories will get pressured into harsher sanctions, they'll be under the fucking microscope atm for leniency for tory donars.

Also one of the most corrupt countries throughout that period.

But it seems we're done here.

You started denigrating Ukrainian democracy as a counter to the idea the Ukrainians voting for parties that want looser ties with Russia indicates that they want looser ties with Russia. In that regard the level of corruption in their society is not relevant to whether they are able to vote for parties that represent the majority view on foreign policy.

By who? The telegraph which censored their own investigation because their main advertiser is HSBC when HSBC was involved with dodgy shit? Tell me with a straight face they will hold them to some form of standards

The daily mail which has supported Putins defacto annexations since South Ossetia in 2008?

One of Murdochs mouth pieces? They dont give a shit who runs what as long as the money flows their way, who gives a shit if its Russian

Labour party is in pretty deep with Russian money too.

Theres a quote floating around (probably from Abe Lincoln) that the reason UK rates so highly on the UN corruption index isnt because UK politicians are honest, simply that they are so cheap

It's a start Gwad. I expected less out of them tbh.
It's pathetic.

It's window dressing and bluster to make people feel we're doing something.

The biggest threatened sanction is cutting Russia off from the SWIFT transaction network.

Whoop de do.
