They're going to have to ramp up storage (which will still work out cheaper than nuclear).
This is because nuclear isn't there - and isn't going to be there. Period. So it's renewables + storage or bust.
If it's bust, it's 3deg+ heating and the shitstorm that goes with it.
And again - to keep on-topic - nothing here helps Ukraine. (Other than putting on jumpers and shutting down some industry - and we don't care enough to do that).

Lol. I'd love to live in the fantasy world you inhabit where we can just magic up enough storage to run the country for 3 weeks in winter when the wind doesn't blow.
It's nuclear or gas. Period. Considering the lead times on nuclear I'd guess we better get fracking then.
Also us putting on an extra jumper, shutting down some industry and generally partying like it's 1959 won't help Ukraine much at all, considering most of our gas comes from the North Sea, Norway and Qatar - I believe we get less than 5% of it from Russia. Plus going by the feedback from Ukrainians all the way up to the president I'd suggest the UK is currently doing plenty by sending anti tank weaponry and other such stuff across.

Look, this is not the thread for your obscure reality, there is a whole thread for your "let's all just put a jumper on" bollocks, But I was brought up with a choice of heating or food, and it absolutely fucking sucked, not an inconvenience, it is life effecting. Renewables are the future but however you look at it, there needs to be a back-up plan for when those renewables are not producing, which is either nuclear, gas, coal or oil, only one of which can be turned on and off when needed, the other 3 need entire distribution chains, that by definition cannot be turned off and on. Sure, currently we aren't quite sure what to do with the leftovers from nuclear, but managed, it isn't going to destroy the planet.

When I say We I mean the UK. We are supplying the latest weapons designed. So please fuckoff out of this thread. I don't worry about what other NATO members are doing but us. We are near or at the front when it comes to arming/training Ukrainian forces and have been for years.
We announced today that we are sending more StarStreak systems (apparently the most advanced in the world) amongst other military equipment. Praise the UK and Ukraine. Not some cunt living in Wales who knows better than anyone living on the planet Earth apart from raising some fucking chickens.

Balls @Deebs - it suits people to say "I'm only talking about the UK" when we point out "the West" is helping with Ukraine, and then they flip to have a pop at Germany because all the energy shit is clearly Germany's fault and the fact that the UK only sends Russia a bit of money and all the best weapons means "wah wah wah wah wah the UK is fucking perfect".
The west - all of us in NATO - is at odds with Russia for their illegal invasion of Ukraine. 100%.
Russia can absolutely point at us and go "well you fuckers invaded Iraq and killed a million people and they weren't even on your border ffs".
Neither invasion was remotely justified - and both ended in utter horror - but I won't ever buy into rampant jingoism. I'll always have an eye on the hypocricy of the country I live in. It doesn't mean I don't think Russia is fucking awful and that Ukrainians aren't getting utterly fucked over - I clearly do. But refuse to buy into blind patriotism.
All of this, all of it - is just dumb humans being dumb. Russia didn't need to invade. We all need to co-operate. And if most of humanity don't want to think or feel that way then fair enough - some of us do.

Are you dumb? You said "We are sending shit equipment" but the UK is not. When I say "We" I refer to the country I live in, the UK. We are sending state of the art weapons to help. I also suspect in the nest week(s) that we will start up more gas/oil exports from the North Sea.

When we're bad actors - kick up an almighty stink. Because the British state is made of humans exactly like any other human on the rest of the planet - and the only thing stopping our leaders acting like any others (including Russia's) is because the population won't let them get away with it and we've been lucky enough to have some semblence of democracy (which is rapidly being eroded) - and speech free enough so dissenters can speak their mind to the annoyance of others.

The UK is being absolutely disgusting regarding taking in refugees, there are literally rich folk queuing up to house people, but they can't because the Tories are essentially scum.
On the flip side, the war would have been lost weeks ago if we hadn't spent the last ~5 years equipping and training Ukrainian soldiers, for that we can be proud, I know it's fashionable to continually bash ourselves, but in this situation, we did absolutely right.
If we were to directly engage Russian forces, RAF flying over Ukraine etc, Russian forces would be annihilated, but it would escalate the war into a global war, which nobody wants.
Russia started this, Russia are continuing with it, only Russia can stop it. All we can do is to make is less and less appetising for Russia to continue. The only people that can topple Putin and his mates are the people of Russia, if that means we have to starve them out then so be it, they need to wake the fuck up.
And no, the EU are not doing enough, not at all, because some member states have foolishly become reliant on Russia for energy. "bUt wE iMpOrT gAs FrOm RuSsIA11!" yeah fuck off, a tiny amount. Sure, that needs to be zero, but please direct your anger at the EU, not us.
