If we were to directly engage Russian forces, RAF flying over Ukraine etc, Russian forces would be annihilated, but it would escalate the war into a global war, which nobody wants.

This is an incorrect opinion.
Who the fuck is actually going to join russia in this "world war"?

The entirety of europe, the us and the developed world is against russia here.

The chinese are international businessmen doing international business. They don't give a fuck.
It's fear of nuclear annihilation, nothing to do with a world war.

We'd shit on russia and take moscow inside a week if it wasn't for their nuclear capability, let's be real.

To be fair we’d never be able to occupy Russia. It’s too big. But we could destroy their conventional forces in days.

Is Russias military really in a worse position than it was pre WW2? Ie could Russia hold out and rebuild.

Armchair general time!

Their equipment is largely "fine" but they clearly have absolutely no idea how to use any of it. Non-trained, poorly fed, poorly equipped conscripts who do not know what the goal is.

I read something recently that explained how in any modern army, the chain of command goes down through the ranks to battlefield command, where Russia don't have that, so generals are out on the front, giving easy targets. Dying generals causes panic.

And any armchair general will tell you, you don't win wars with just soldiers, you win wars with logistics.

I think the main problem with Russia is lack of training. They've been sat back for so long, doing nothing but posture/threaten people and doing no real training so they just get fucking annihilated by even civilians that have had very minimal training from proper trained soldiers.

It's like that scene in Robocop 3... where they recruit the Splatter-Punks to fight for them, the Splatter-Punks are basically Russia.

(Minus the Spanish..... you get the idea)

Good mate of mine is in IntCorps and works on the PMs daily briefings. He said that Russia have always bragged about how many state of the art tanks they've got, and their legions of "super soldiers". Apparently they've seen 15 tanks and no super soldiers and they've just been talking shite the entire time.

It isn't new, also it isn't new that the Western military and contractors quite happily go along with the Russian bragging because it means they can often get more money for their projects.

Again I use this video as a perfect example:

That's because most of the troops are conscripts and the creme de la crème of the Russian army got killed in planes during the first couple of days which was bizarre.
(Insert theory about Putin sacrificing the elite units because they could be a threat to his power?)

Also stuff like the T-14 tank is hardly appropriate to use, but now everything is on the eastern front I suspect we'll see 'proper' tank warfare.

Putin also said it was "inevitable" that there'd be a war. Like, yeah, if you illegally invade them and claim part of their country as your own, bully and threaten them for the best part of a decade, park 150+k troops on the border and then illegally invade again, I guess it was.

I thought Finns of all people would join; it would be like if Ireland had a suddenly belligerent UK next door. Swedes have much less to fear.

Neutrality and not getting involved has been main policy for so long, NATO support is highest its ever been but theres surprisingly a lot of folks here that feel Ukraine had it coming by moving closer to NATO, this seems like a dumb argument to me but as has been seen on these very forums some people have odd views on this. There was earlier on also a lot of fuss in media and online about how US and EU had conspired to remove the pro Russian government so Russia was just defending Ukrainian democracy

TL;dr the troll farms are strong here and people, everywhere, are idiots

I believe that if Finland decides not to then Sweden will also decide not to although I think there may be a majority in parliament now Socialdemokraterna have become more positive. Swedish Democrats are waiting to see what Finland does. Currently, 43% of Swedish want to join, 33% do not with the rest undecided - I think a decision like this would go to a referendum...

There are positives and negatives to both sides.. the most immediate risk Sweden have is Götland as it is believed that from Götland you can control the baltic sea ... oO

During the winter war, the Finnish had a beast of an army that kept the Russians at bay for a long time in a war that lasted 3 months and a bit - I would not want to go to war with Finland ...... a country that has a word for sitting on the sofa in only underwear drinking alone (with no intention of going out..) - Kalsarikännit. They are a nation of hard bastards - well the ones I know and have met are.

But wasn't Finland's original neutrality stance forced on it at the end of WW2? It wasnt really a choice.

It was initially, and then enforced by the long years of Kekkonen, he is still revered as the great peacemaker (despite his womanising and other flaws), he was someone the Russians seemed to trust so he kept being made president despite two term limits in law.

Another big worry from Finns point of view is being dragged into some far off war like Afghanistan
