A decent launch platform. There are others ofc, the French, the US etc, but it's probably too late in the day to just change.

Each drone can carry 4 missiles, which with a lucky shot could take out 2 vehicles each. They have limited drones and limited missiles. You have to assume that at some point soon the Russians will mount a defence of it's supply chains.

A 40 mile convoy is a very long line to defend from hunter killer squads armed with Javelin, NLAW and other man portable anti armour weapons. A 40 mile convoy in the middle of nowhere is just a big long line of vehicles as well. Those in the convoy will need feeding and the convoy will need fuelling. It also won't be moving fast. By the time that the first couple of miles of tracked vehicles has gone past the roads will be beginning to get torn up, after 5 miles of vehicles it'll be a swamp.

I'd imagine that if this is Russia's biggest convoy it would have some defence against drone strikes. Small units equipped with anti-tank weapons though taking out a few units could easily block the road for hours and be repeated again and again. Although I wouldn't want to be the guys doing it :/

Which is why i'd expect them to drive up in a huge convoy, park them up, go steal local cars then come in from a different direction dressed as civilians.

They are Russian after all.

Also, the Mujahideen doesn't strictly translate into the Taliban, the 'Northern Alliance' was former Mujahideen and anti-Taliban.

I think it's a bit of 20/20 hindsight tbh... You could easily present the theory that Ukraine could have a Nazi/nationalist/wedon'tlikethatformofgovernment coup, because you know, being invaded kinda boosts your patriotism and militarism and suddenly we've got a country on our hands that is well armed, but doesn't care for either the West or Russia...

The problem in my opinion wasn't funding the Mujahideen, it was the emotional response of invasion post 9/11.

At the time "anti-Communist" was far more important to the Americans in particular than "pro-Islamic"; in fact, to lots of Americans of the fundie Christian variety, being religiously devout, even if it was Islam rather than Jee..Sus was a massive positive. Charlie Wilson's War is a great movie (and book) that shows this in action.

But at the same time, do you know who was supplying far more weapons to the Mujahedeen and far earlier than the Americans? The Chinese. The Soviet Union's fellow travellers. Motivations in wars come from all kinds of directions than simple left/right or religious difference.
