At this point, I agree. Civilians with AKs vs Russians with light armour.

It's going to get much worse, it seems that Russia's troops are very green, meaning that Putin is going to get seriously embarrassed and then take the gloves off.

It would be better for everyone if they had an insurgency which we openly funded, give them a taste of their own medicine.

Would let 'em come in.

They can't beat Russia anyway. No point in massive civilian death. Just hand it over and peacefully non-cooperate.

Of course, arming the civilian population IS the way to protect yourself from oppressive government. But just lets gloss over that when it comes to the USA eh? ;)
Slightly different. The USA is not under invasion.

I mean, the main picture on the BBC has a chap putting a mag in, gun pointing at waist height, finger on the trigger. Giving them guns and pointing them towards the enemy will end in disaster.

Russia threatening Finland and Sweden now over joining NATO.

I think Putin might actually have gone mad.

I would imagine most of the "civilians" have done national service in the past (12 months compulsory since independence) and generally know one end of a rifle from the other.

There'd never be a better time to join. Russia's army is kinda occupied.

Yes but won't it mean that Russia can now properly target civilians?

Ukraine isn't really a good environment for guerilla warfare; its all flat and open with nowhere to hide (except, unfortunately, the east). You can do stuff in the cities but that will be like Iraq, equally brutal for civilians.

I wouldn't put anything past Putin, he has over played his hand, it's not going as he had planned at all. He is a desperate little man.

U.S are about to Sanction Putin directly.

Fingers crossed they seize all of his assets outside of Russia... doubt they will though.

So are the UK and EU...but I don't think it will make much difference, it's not like he will have to resort to beans on toast. More of a "look what we are doing" while doing little.

"Putin has an estimated networth of $200billion" impressive for someone on a $120,000 salary. Corrupt tosspot, I hope they found out where he's stashing it and take the lot. He'll squeal like a pig if they take his treasure.

Cracks showing between China/Russia relationship... China starting to realise they'll also suffer economic damage if they continue backing Putin.

"China's President Xi Jinping has confirmed that during a conservation with his Russia counterpart he supported efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine "through dialogue". This is widely seen as a blow to Mr Putin - whose country and China are normally firmly alligned on the international stage."

That's funny because I read an article that interpreted it as agreeing with Putin.

For context Putin keeps saying he's willing to negotiate.

But only if Ukraine give in to his demands and essentially become a client state, like Belarus. That is not negotiation.

Interesting thread that assumes the reports of large numbers of Russian casualties and that they're not advancing as fast as they planned are accurate...

I mean it definitely didnt go as Putin wanted it to... he was hoping for a fast sweep of the Ukraine and it's basically blown up in his face.

The trouble is, the more desperate they get, the less they care about civilian casualties, they are already firing unguided ordinance into civilian areas.

Edit, and now that the lines are blurred, where the civilian population is armed, Russia will do whatever they like.

It's fucking scandalous that Russia can use a veto power at the UN Security Council to strike down a resolution which condemns them.

Latest update from the missus; all the Ukranians just think we've thrown them under the bus and apparently the only sanction that will hurt the Russians is the Swift ban and why haven't we done it yet?
We have. What did they expect.

Welcome to the west. We don't give a shit about our own population - why the fuck do you think we'll give a shit about yours?
