Lets try that again @Raven:

This is what I said:
Money will go from us to them (directly or indirectly). Gas will flow the other way.
i.e. We will continue to pay Russia for gas. One way or another.

You had a nice pop at the EU. (Which I support). But seem to be blind to our moral transgressions.

Why would we pay Russia for gas? We only import 5% of our gas from Russia (max), and most of us are turning off our heating anyway. It won't go on again until October/November.

Many gas hobs...I guess.

Hmmm. It seems to be some sort of menal block. Ah well.

Edit: BTW - that 5% - 139,778 million cubic feet pa.

Ok... still (less than) 5% of our total usage. Imagine being Germany and consuming 142 billion cubic metres of imported (mostly Russian) gas.

I know the EU cannot possibly do anything wrong...but come on.

All this is besides the point anyway. Russia needs to be stopped, sacrifices need to be made. Gas being key. Turn the tap off, do it now. We (they) will cope.

Edit, I should also add that Germany uses gas for far more than heating, being the fossil fuel loving country that it is.

The vague suggestion is that it's Germany, France and Italy buying the gas.

It's not a suggestion. They actually are, and still are, and intend to buy more. Germany, especially, are still in the dark ages for energy and show little will to grow up.

If it's not Russian gas it's coal.

As will we.

You can't have a pop at anyone else if you're doing the same as them. You had a pop at the EU, but we're still paying billions for Russian gas. Period.

Erm, 5%

We could shut off all Russian gas and nobody in the UK would care or notice.

I know it's a bitter pill to swallow, but the EU is still massively invested in Russian gas, they wouldn't have built Nordstream 2 if they weren't. You can try and shape it all you like, it won't change anything. Period.

So. If someone steals a bit of your wealth, it's OK, because it's only a little bit?

"It's OK m8. You're only a little thief. I'll let you off."

We are still giving Russia billions. Who gives a fuck what the EU is doing? WE are doing it. Period. End of.

Aren't Germany phasing out all their nuclear power stations? In fact I'm pretty sure they've turned off most of them already. They have no replacement source of energy in place so they've shot themselves in the foot and have to buy all that gas.

We've talked about this on here before; German energy policy is a catastrophe, and ironically being hostage to the Greens is leading to more fossil fuel use. They've closed their nuke plants without a plan b, they haven't hit their renewable targets and have had to keep their coal fired power plants open, but they've closed all the local mines, so have to import coal, which of course makes it even more polluting. Absolute fuckwittery. And their military planning is equally fucked up; if NATO did do anything about Ukraine, it wouldn't be with much German help.

47% comes from Europe & Russia : Norway, NL Belgium and Russia provide the most. The UK will be hit hard as Norway has a bigger contact with the EU than the UK and EU countries will supply the EU first. Additionally 85% of homes in the UK have gas central heating- so yes if the UK has no more cold spells not a big problem for individuals

Then there is gas required for UK industry…..

Some’ EU countries have an issue and Germany is one of them there are other EU nations where this is not so much of an issue….

I think you will find 50% comes from the North Sea (our reserves) a third from Norway and the rest either in liquid form or from mainland Europe.

We will be fine...

I am not saying the UK will not be just that the UK are more dependent on gas regardless of where it comes from than many many many EU countries- but you are so wrapped up in your apparent hatred of the EU you have lost objectivity.

The Germans are fubar LT BUT for them to so easily stop NS2 will mean that they will have secured enough energy for the time being and if they haven’t what is it to you? The UK have enough so you say…

He is a freelance American journo in Ukraine and the thread doesn't shine a great light on either Russia or Ukraine

How vulnerable are the UK’s gas supplies?
“We must collectively cease the dependence on Russian oil and gas that for too long has given Putin his grip on western politics,” Boris Johnson said on Thursday.

The good news, for the UK’s security of supply at least, is that less than 5% of our gas comes from Russian imports. About half comes from vast, though rapidly dwindling, North Sea reserves. Another third is sourced from Norway, while the rest comes in via pipelines connecting the UK to Europe, or in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is transported by tankers typically from Qatar or the US. All of this means, according to a report by the Oxford Institute of Energy Studies, that Britain is “unlikely to face a physical shortage of supplies”.

No, I couldn't care less about the EU, I was simply correcting you.
