Or rather, "enough democrats voted independent to fuck Clinton". Independents in the last two elections 1.4-1.7%, in this one, 4.8%. That's a huge shift.

Not quiet true. There's a big republican movement called never trump, republicans that refused to vote democrat but also refused to vote trump. not sure if they went 3rd party or just abstained but their missing votes were made up by side switchers

Just because I had nothing better to do... I looked at data from the number of Senators in the senate for each party, the number of representatives in the house for each party and who was President at the time.
Biggest dominance for any party (since 1867) was (in order):
Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democrats) in 1937-1939
Ulysses S. Grant (Republicans) in 1873-1875
Bill Clinton (Democrats) in 1991-1993.

That "total dominance [in the] 20's" you speak of was Pres. Warren G. Harding (R) when republicans had 61.46% of the senate and 68.97% of the house of representatives, in 1921-1923. These numbers are very close to Kennedy (1959-1961) and Carter (1975-1979).

Trump and the republicans have no kind of dominance in this election, 54% Senate, 56.78% House of reps. And that is before all the votes are counted. (My data is a few hours old). FH don't like Excel so I took screenshots...

This kinda reflects my attitude to the US election tbh. As much as id like to argue against right-wing views (NHS budget not increased so explains strains. Not immigrants, we need immigrants to pay for pensions etc) I really haven't been fussed about the US elections since there isn't anyone here who voted in it, minus a couple who are not the most active readers.

However when the result was released some guy on a discord for a Arma3 mod I'm working on was beating about it and I put all his arguments for voting for Trump down and at the end he was like 'oh yeah.' (Import tax, higher minimum wage less trade unions = worse conditions with not a massive pay increase and everything America will rocket in price thus making the rise in minimum wage redundant)

Only if politicians did this rather than just going for character assassinations.

It is more a reflection of society. You are just not allowed an opinion any more. I have been saying it since way before Brexit, if all people do is shut down argument or discussion or resort to insults then they allow their opponents to win. The left were never like that, they engaged with the right and sometimes won them over. It's a clusterfuck at the moment and US election certainly isn't the last to have an outcome like this.

The right is on the rise, shutting it down won't stop it.
