Something about a card school during England duty and Rooney ended up owing Micheal Owen's best friend over £100,000 which Owen apparently applied alot of pressure to get Rooney to stump up. The story was widely reported in the press and roughly since that time Owen has not been picked regualrly for the England squad since so there may well be some truth in it.

If he owed the money the fucker should have paid. Everyone in that card game should have put pressure on him. Why am I not suprised the fat petulant CHAV would not cough up! Good on Owen for trying to teach the cretin some honour.

Has Ferguson realised his club is not the draw people think it is, it seems like all his targets would rather go so spain? ;)

Owen fit would be a great player for anyone and seeing as he is a free transfer he might be worth the risk, but i can't get over someone who "loves" Liverpool signing for the mancs football mercenaries again.

The premier league never has attracted world class players.

Thats why the top clubs steal off others and make world class players.

Tbfh they should be getting Gutierrez from the geordies, that lad is class. Owen is too much of a risk for my liking but I do understand why Fergie thinks it might be worth a punt.

Although I still maintain that money is not the reason the majority of players move, it was raised on general, that the top level tax (which most premier league footballers will pay) is 50% in the UK. It is 20% in Spain. We just cannot compete with the wages in the Premier League, and the strong euro is not helping things either.

Owen we be a good sub, but, we must still chase young up and coming strikers.

I doubt most players pay tax on the majority of thier wages, can't you get paid abroad and avoid the tax? Would not be surprised if they get 100k a year taxable wages and the rest paid as tax free bonus ect?

The tax rate in Spain for high earners is 43%.

There was an article on the beeb on HMRC cracking down on football tax evasion. The pay itself is via PAYE, so the tax comes off automatically, it's the bonus and signing on payments that they avoid tax on. If you look at big player moves in recent years you will see a lot about players wanting a certain salary AFTER tax (eto'o being the most recent example). It may sound like he is being very greedy, but he is trying to ensure parity with his salary had he stayed in spain.

As I said above, the tax rate is 43% over there so not much different here. Eto doesnt want parity at all. Is he on £250k a week after tax at barca?

He is just being gready

As for tax loopholes, Soze more than anyone should know about them, after Arse got stung for £10m or whatever it was, for using them.

My bad, that was the info from the general thread.

Looking into it the tax is 27%, and then they pay extra depending on which province of spain they live in, which can take it up to 45%, but can be a lot less.

In the main footballing areas you will pay the full tax rates

The law, first conceived to aid foreign business investment, allows foreign footballers playing in Spain to be taxed on only 24 percent of their income, instead of 43 percent for other Spaniards in the same income bracket.
It is popularly know as the "Beckham law", after English footballing icon David Beckham, who was the first to benefit after his arrival at Real Madrid in 2003.

He took Patrice Evra apart twice last season and made a monkey out a couple of our right backs as well. The guy has the skill to be top class, he just needs direction and motivation, something totally lacking at Newcastle.

By the same logic Kenny Miller is the one of greatest strikers around. Just because they have a top game against you doesnt mean that there dogs bollocks mate :p.

Not many make Evra look poor and he did, I didn't base it off one performance either but he did exceptionally well against us in both league games last season and was by far Newcastles best player in those matches.

Oh and Kenny Miller in a decent side with quality service would do pretty well, he is no Pele or even in the same universe but he will always nick a decent amount of goals given good service. Everything I have seen of Gutierrez has convinced me that he could do a great job in the United setup given the right motivation.

You said Miller would do well :<.. i can't take you seriously Cho.

That 2 games out of a 38 league game season that'll he'll perform great then, what an excellent buy he will be!

He had too many injury problems while at newcastle, did not score enough, lots of his runs end with nothing. Exciting yes, but consistent no -offers nothing over Nani, and far far worse than Valencia.

While I think he would do a lot better at a better team, I have no wish for him to join united.

Got to admit of all the places I'd have put money on Owen going to, Old Trafford was soooo not on the list.

Off having a medical atm apparently

Yeah, and there's also that bridge to gap with ex-Liverpool players playing for United with the fans and their natural hatred of my city's opted club. I personally wish him luck. If anyone can do that and fair well, then Owen can do it. But the question that is raised in my mind is, can he cope with being just a fringe player. It didn't go down well with him at Real Madrid. I see no reason as to why this should change unless your main man Alex F uses him like Teddy Sherringham and he makes a moderate success of himself. Failure will not be tolerated from the fans on this one. This will shed blood if it all goes wrong, and us Scousers will just watch from the fringes and say nothing.

I for one agree with Sam Allardyce on this transfer, I am glad Rafa Benitez hasn't got overly sentimental like he did with Robbie Fowler. Owen is past it, (I really hope he proves me wrong) his pace isn't what it was when he was at Liverpool. His greed was his undoing. Ok, he's a rich mofo. But that's says sod all about his form since he left Liverpool.

im annoyed owen is going to utd but at the same time i understand it, he wants to get back into the england set up and hes not going to do that at hull or stoke

also lol at every 1 slating owens form/ability

he hasnt palyed cos of injury every1 knows this, but he got sometihng liek 16 gaols in 30 games for madric (most were 10 min sub cameos) and like 37 in 73 for newcastle

so his ratios is still over 1 in 2 which is fantastic, well worth a punt on a free and i wish rafa would get him back, atm we have torres and ermmmmm ngog

wow EPIC

I don't want Owen at all even if he was 100% fit.

Reason being he played for Liverpool through the ranks and turned out to be a crowd favourite etc, it would be like Beckham signing for Liverpool, It's just not right.

Looking like it will go through according to SSN, so the Utd/Liverpool games next season will have that extra edge.
