Is the SR-71 still the worlds fastest military aircraft?

The Foil Hat Brigade would say the Aurora F19, but no one's seen it, and its existence is denied by the USG...cue X Files music & Area 51 footage.

Its no longer in service and its speed records probably won't be beaten for a long while because the fast reconnaissance role has been replaced by satellites. Current fastest plane in service is the MIG-31 (just under Mach 3).

If anything faster than the SR-71 gets built it will probably be a scramjet along the lines of the Boeing X-51. (NB This is probably why Aurora is a myth; its 25 years after the first Aurora rumours and they can't get this to work properly).

Yes it is. It depends on how you want to look at it though. Space shuttle, the X-43 and the X-51 all have bin faster. But the space shuttle isnt an aircraft nor really military. X planes are in development (NASA and military), no one is sure if they ever go into production.

The third flight of the X-43A set a new speed record of 10,617 km/h (6,598 mph), or Mach 9.65at 33528 meters (110000 ft)
