Wow. People need to get off the W8 hate-wagon and learn to use the software.

Took me about 2 seconds to "learn" how to use it. It's a good consumer OS for tablets.

For business use (which I'm concerned with as I was an MS techie for 15 years) it's a load of twat. It's not a "metric tonne" faster. It's demonstrably slower for professional use and the loss of the start menu, which had 10+ years development into it's useability with a mouse + keyboard, is integral to that productivity loss.

Last I looked most corporate business is done at a computer with a mouse and a keyboard - not a wanky tablet.

I like Windows 8 and bar having a list of my applications that I can click on I see no difference. Pressing the the Start button the keyboard and typing "out" is just a fast as clicking Start then Clicking Outlook.

A quicker way to shut down would be nice. Other than that I am happy with it and I see no need to install Start 8 or similar. I have always (since it was introduced anyway) pinned my favorite programs to the Start bar and only used the Start Button for programs i use once in a blue moon and to shut down. Change is not always bad.

It self-evidently isn't. Its four clicks v. two.

This seems pointlessly argumentative but "Start > All Programs > WatchGuard > WatchGuard System Manager" is four clicks. "Start > All Program > Accessories > System Tools > Task Scheduler" is 5 clicks. And is I press the Start key then "o" Outlook 2013 is highlighted for me. So I just don't fell like I am losing too much time without the Start Menu.

I read they are putting the start button back in, in one of the updates.

But you're not gaining any either. Like Scouse says, I get Win8 for touch, I really do, its a great touch UI. But there are no benefits to Win 8 in a mouse/kb environment, and quite a lot of unnecessary frustrations, that could have been easily avoided if MS hadn't been so dogmatic about Metro.

Might be a silly question, but can't you just press the power button on your PC? I have it set to shutdown on my home and work PCs.

They are but only a button that takes you to Metro. They are not putting the Start Menu back. Well all the evidence is that they will but not until more applications are Metro and RT friendly. Until then we only get the Metro start menu.

Yeah I could set it to do the same. But I would rather do the 5 clicks than do that :) I could leave a batch file on my desk top to do it too. That might be easiest.

I am not saying i gain anything or that it is faster I am just saying after getting used to it I do not mind the difference and I do not find the lack of a Start Menu slows me down at all.

Nah, they're not. They're putting a windows icon in the desktop where the start button used to be and it takes you to the "start screen" but leaves your desktop wallpaper in the background.

So it's exactly the same, but looks a little different...

Do you have kids? Every time I format, the first thing I do is disable that feature because kids WILL press it.

I'm yet to find a single sysadmin who doesn't hate it as it kills Win7's ease of use for a pro.
I do like your not so subtle digs you throw that because I do not work the same as you I can't be a pro. It far from kills productivity the Start Menu for me was a place to launch applications and nothing else so doing that in a different way has not killed the operating system. I think you are just one of these people that hates change.

Can't talk for Scouse but I'm not. I'm also all over UI for a living and Metro is a poor UI for mouse/kb. This isn't exactly a minority view; there a very few positive reviews for Win 8 and stock market sentiment about it was pretty bad as well.

I still quite like Win7. Won't be buying 8 though, don't really see the point to it.
8 is a fuckload faster to boot, etc. If you aren't bothered by Metro then it's worth the update, if you are then obviously it's not.

I don't hate change. Never had a problem with any previous upgrades of any Microsoft OS from MS DOS onwards. They've all had something that takes the OS forward.

Win8 is the first retrograde step MS have taken in terms of general useability.

As for "subtle digs" - they're not digs and they're not subtle. For a consumer OS, it's fine. For a professional OS, especially in terms of systems administration (the "pro" I referred to - not the average consumer) it's wank...

To boot, a bit. Saves me maybe ten seconds. Once every three days.

As for the "etc" - what else is faster? I lose more than ten seconds with unnecessary keystrokes and mouse clicks...

You'd lose a fuckload more then if you stopped posting :p

The whole system is more responsive IMHO, application switching, file management (massively improved). Basically if you launch applications by pressing the Win key then typing the programs first few letters (which I've been doing since Vista) then 8 will give you a bunch of speed improvements and you won't care about the Metro UI. I barely notice it tbfh.

Its just a steamin pile of mismatched junk snd its supposed to be the response of the largest software company in the world to freefalling pc sales and its first real threat from tablets and android.
If thats the best they can do they need to close up and fuck off now because they will be dead in the water in five years time..it is fuckin woefull..it doesnt wether its emulating android or still a pc..explaing the two 'desktops' to my mother was pathetic. .after 5 min she said 'can we take it back and get a tablet?'
I could have done better myself with a week and a crate of beer.

Again I am not saying it is great and i am not saying Metro is even good. Bot to say Metro destroys productivity for a SysAdmin boggles my mind. When i have to do a SysAdmin role I open an application and I do a task in the application, I do not sit in the Start Menu to fix it. The idea that anyone especially a SysAdmin thinks the lack of a start menu ruins productivity is amazing. The Start menu for me is a way to open applications. 99% of my day I will not see the Metro UI I am on my desk top and I am running applications that are pinned to my start bar. If it is not pinned I press Start and Type the name. It has had no impact on my productivity and my ability to do my job.

So no I do not think Metro is great but I do like Windows 8 and the lack of a Start Menu has had no impact on my life or my job. If people dont like it that is fine it is personal preference but saying it makes it unusable is Oo

I think windows 8 on anything that isn't touchscreen is a disaster tbh.

I hate using my wifes laptop because it keeps losing focus to the frame at the edge when doing something as contravertsial as moving the mouse.

I'm buying a new gaming pc soon and would rather hack off one of my arms than get it with windows 8.

I was going to get a Samsung Series 7 Chronos with Touchscreen windows 8. But if the screen isn't detachable, no point going for touchscreen imo (and only a part of the screen is touch anyway)

So, decided instead to get something a little more powerful with a bigger screen and built-in optical drive for the same cash

Specs:

17.3" full HD screen
Intel i7 Quad Core 4900-MQ 2.8GHz 8MB
12GB 1600 RAM
Nvidia Gforce GTX765M 2GB DDR5
1TB Hard drive
120GB SSD
6x Blu Ray, 8x DVD
Wireless mouse (I hate using laptop tracker pads)
Windows 7
Microsoft Office

Am I the only one who just has a classic start bar installed on windows 8 and as a result avoids all the problems people complain about? For me it's literally an upgraded windows 7.
