This isn't being driven by the UK; the 2G network globally will be a patchwork quilt globally by the end of this year. Europe is sunsetting it more slowly (3G seems to be going faster) but it's still happening.

It's still rubbish that Nissan are killing it in the UK, but it's also not remotely surprising, and long term support for apps is a minefield, not just in automotive; I've just been through something similar at work where an app has been outsourced by our core software provider and then became completely unsupportable. Apps, especially Android Apps, are a fucking pain in the arse. Always have been.

Yeah. I get that 100%.

However, what Nissan should be doing with the cars that are 4 years newer than my perfectly good Volvo, is replacing the 2G component with some 4G/5G compatible thing to extend the life of the car.

If the design makes that impossible, then governments need to step in to make that modular functionality a legal requirement.

What's shit about it is that 2G isn't getting officially turned off for 5 more years. So why disable it?

I have a fundamental problem with tech companies just deciding they're not supporting (i.e. they're bricking by choice) perfectly functional things.

E.g. Sonos bricked a load of perfectly good speakers. Aside from it being the opposite of 'customer service' it's environmentally reprehensible.

There needs to be a law change - if you sell a product it must be supported until it breaks on it's own. (And built-in obsolecence should be criminalised).

I used to have some cloud security cameras made by Y-Cam. They were sold with free cloud storage for life. Then one day Y-Cam decided actually they don't want to do that any more, and tough shit.

I'd bought one from Amazon and one direct. Amazon refunded me immediately, even though the unit was a few years old. For the direct purchase, I took Y-Cam to court and they settled immediately.

Now I have Hikvision cameras with an NVR (they protect my work equipment) and perhaps some Chinese dude is watching me walk around naked in the house, but at least they can't ever stop it working.

/edit: just checked, Y-Cam have shut down. Lol, they deserve it the cunts.

Plenty of people use Hikvision cameras safely. Unless you use their cloud services, there is absolutely no cause for concern. You run them in a locally isolated environment, and that's it.

I've had them for 2 years now, they don't phone home.

Plan route on google maps desktop. Click the "send to phone" button.

Fuck all happens.

Thanks Google.
Yeah that's broken for me too. Up to date Android app, logged in to both with same account, phone unlocked, even with Google Maps open when I send and it just sits there.

I use Waze anyway and planning the route on waze.com and sending to phone works but a) it's a bit clunky because you have to scan a QR code to send it and b) you can only have a single destination, you can't add stops.

By design. No one really believed it would trickle down.

Agreed. Mainly because Trickle Down economics has never been a thing and has always been used as a retarded strawman by people who don't like tax cuts.

So we'll done leftie retards - you've debunked something that doesn't exist.

Like socialism that brings prosperity I guess.

That's a straw man article. Most people do understand that wealth has to be generated in order to be redistributed. Virtually no one is advocating communism.

What most of us argue against is the idea that redistribution can't happen while you still have capitalist economic growth. That's just bollocks. There is no evidence to suggest that redistribution of some of that income / wealth significantly reduces wealth generation. Most countries have generous tax breaks for investment.

What most of us do object to is using articles like that to argue that it's fine that the super-rich get to sit on huge piles of cash and get taxed at a much lower effective rate than the average worker (cos they can just leave their wealth alone and get loans for income at super-cheap rates and not get taxed on them at all). That doesn't encourage any investment and it doesn't pay the government anything to maintain the infrastructure and healthy workforce they rely on.

Unlike yourself I'm not going to spend my afternoon arguing for/against something which doesn't exist. No serious economist has ever advocated for "trickle down" economics, so I'm not sure why you're so keen to disprove it's existence.

Oh noes, an actual economist never used that term! Ooh, what an intellectual gotcha! How will we cope with the shame of our ignorance?

Supply side economics is a thing; don't be a pedantic twat.

Well I'd suggest if you want to successfully argue against something on the internet, it kind of helps to get the terminology right on what you're arguing against.

You could call that pedantry, I'd be more tempted to call it accuracy tbh.

I did economics at Uni before dropping it because it was boring. There was a serious wing of economists who thought that the less we tax the rich, the more economic growth would occur. The popular term for it, and one that wasn't completely unused by economists, was trickle-down. Research has shown little evidence that it was true.

In short. I am correct.

Maybe no serious economist has advocated for it (I mean, they have, but lets gloss over that) - but policy has been based around it. Your goddess Margaret Thatcher said one of her biggest regrets after instituting laissez-faire capitalism was finding out that trickle-down economics doesn't work.

The dumb bitch.

So yep. Keep capitalism - it works as a wealth generator. And put a wealth ceiling in - nobody to be worth more than £100 million. Everything in excess of that goes back to health, environment, education.

Stupendous wealth still allowed. Poor people still allowed. Wealth becomes productive again.

Democracy-distorting super rich? Fuck 'em.

Yep. Serious economists (and politicians) have indeed been using it for years.

I mean - the chairman of the federal reserve might be one of them?

I don't know why so many relatively poor people have had their brains captured by the propaganda of super rich. They've fallen so hard that the very idea of taxing the super rich genuinely terrifies them - even though they're the ones who stand to benefit.

I have new respect for roofers. Took me a whole day to get from first to last. Struggling a bit with how the lead flashing goes over the battens, and how the membrane goes over the lead. I think it'll become more obvious once I slate it. Still pondering whether to go for reclaimed Welsh slate (purple), or new Spanish slate (grey). I'd prefer the former but I'm a bit skint this year. 90% of the slates that came off are junk, 100 years of freezing water has delaminated them beyond re-use.

There's a badly rotten rafter under there but it's in such a tricky place to get to I decided to leave it. Considered putting a new rafter alongside it but the ceiling below is in the way.

It's only rotten for about 2 feet right at the bottom, it isn't doing a lot anyway, the new battens will take up the slack.

Tomorrow's tasks are to finish battening, sort out that lead valley so it's a bit neater, and lime mortar the top of the back wall (to the right) so it's neater.

My body feels wrecked. I'm a fairly active person but I can see why roofers are usually like greyhounds.
