Can someone explain to the village idiot that people are not going out to enclosed croweded places generally to be good citzens and protect the vulnerable rather than total hysterial (or that is the reason that most people are giving where I live). The supermarkets near to my home are not being emptied there is plenty of fresh food so from what I see here people are being quite ok at the moment.

My wife went shopping last night at around 6 pm when everyone would have been done with work etc, supermarket was a bit packed but people weren't going mad, she was able to get £200 worth of shopping without any sort of issues, even got some extra toilet roll.

Its just that even though SARS was a more deadly virus, no one gave a shit.

It peetered out at 700 world deaths even though it was first predicted to kill millions.

HN1 in 2009 killed 12K Americans and 250K worldwide, I remember a few people on tv wearing masks...barely a murmur from the government.

So far Corona has killed 5K and any guesses of death rate are pointless atm.
Its the mild symptoms that make it an issue, you dont know you have it and can pass it on.
Its media hysteria that has driven the government reactions.

Healthline..fact checked.

To be fair I've seen some pretty stupid (and highly unnecessary) behaviour in supermarkets in the last week or so; to the extent I heard a radio ad from one of the supermarket chains in the car today which was basically a super-polite "calm the fuck down" message. And looking at UK friends on FB they've been pointing out similar behaviour over there.

You're absolutely correct that there isn't actually a problem with supply anywhere, but, once again, that has to come with the caveat, "yet". I'm also very concerned that lots of cafes, bars and small businesses aren't going to come out of the other side of this.

Official stats for you. So far from official figures, its mainly old people and people with pre-existing conditions that are dying to the Corona Virus, most other people are just recovering from it after a few days.

Isn't it because it's a flu strain that it's so concerning?

It's highly contagious, that's the primary concern, compared to the likes of Ebola which was much harder to catch but had a much higher death rate.

The second concern is that it's a flu virus, so it could continue and mutate for a very long time to come, making it much more difficult to vaccinate.

@Job have you checked for the responses from the likes of WHO? They're probably the best organisation to take seriously and not take much notice of the hysteria.

The only thing that concerns me is that we appear (as a country) to be trying out new things that other countries are doing the opposite of.

Not true @Gwadien Sweden is not closing schools either for the same reasons as the UK - it will put terrible pressure on our emergency workers.

Finland also has not closed schools yet but expecting it early next week tbh, the rate of new cases per day seems to go down in countries that have closed schools but might be too early to tell if it is effective

It's 2x more contagious than a regular cold iirc.

There are advantages to both methods, governments can only go on what they are told.

The virus is largely hidden in most countries, the majority of people in a country with it will not be counted since it is just those who actually make contact with the health services who will go into the statistics. The impression this virus is going to disappear is massively wrong, it'll keep bouncing around for some time with any of these methods countries are using and the only thing you can hope is to extend the time frame so you might have a vaccine to eradicate this version of the virus as well as reduce the load.

Government's make decisions based on options given to them.

That's why these politically neutral scientists go to downing street to tell Boris what his choices are.

Thing is theres not really an expert on this particular virus. So its all based on old data. The last pandemic was before mass travel so all they can do is model and predict and hope. Which is why there are differences in different countries.

You can be hideously pragmatic and stop chasing numbers, closing down a country is hugely destructive for the economy and the world economy if everyone does it.

Or..keep calm, carry on and let it burn through, people will die, shit happens.
The vast majority of those will be people with one foot in the grave anyway, we all get herd or personal immunity, evolution wins.

Looks like people power is winning though...everyone's said..fuck that.
Which is glorious in itself.

I guess the main ideological question to ask is what is the economy?

My personal view is that people are the economy so letting them die off in hope some survive is shooting yourself in the foot

Yeah you see, this is my problem.

Economy > Humans.

Everyone knows the best solution to this is to enforce martial law for 2 weeks and keep EVERYBODY indoors.

But meh, the economy :D

You get a considerable increase in death rates in many areas when economies tank hard, the after effects of the 2008 crash have shown that in a number of studies.

You realise a 2 week enforcement isn't long enough as soon as you hit three people in a house, plus it is almost unenforceable in most western countries.

Rumours going around, out here in the sandpit, that the UK is about to close borders.

To some degree everyone should properly do it to America simply because they are so far behind the curve, even then I have serious doubts as stated earlier that you can do it for long enough to make any difference to a country.

The group, specialising in a range of disciplines, ranging from mathematics to genetics, though no leading experts in the science of the spread of diseases, said the current measures are "insufficient" and "additional and more restrictive measures should be taken immediately", as is happening in other countries.

The Herd Immunity Boris is pushing is fucking idiotic. He's being torn apart by immunologists.
