Because it means the BBC is excellent value for money.

If you have to pay your £150 anyway you can either pay it and get nothing, or pay it and get the BBC for free.

Scrap the BBC and you still have to pay £150...

But not keep a bunch of Islington wankers in a cushy number getting money for nothing. That £150 would be far better spent elsewhere, Internet infrastructure for example, free handjobs in every public toilet, anything.

The BBC fee goes into all the infrastructure as well doesn't it? So all Freeview TV comes over the infrastructure delivered by your TV Licence?

And there's your answer. I am happy to pay some sort of tax/license fee/subsidy call it what you like to keep the infrastructure up to date. Paying to view content I have no interest in watching, no thanks. So if the infrastructure portion was reduced to say £5 (numbers to show what I mean not meta-analysis thanks) and the rest was a subscription cost, I would be happy to pay the £5 to keep the transmitters etc running, less happy to pay for a lot of shit content.

But the remaining 145 would just go into general taxation; you personally wouldn't be any better off and Rupert Murdoch gets his heart's desire. Seems like a totally shit deal to me.

Most of those "Islington wankers" are in Salford now, but don't let that get in the way of your little class warrior rant, and cost wise, most of them are paid less than their commercial TV equivalents, from the DG down.

Yep. This is the crux of it @Raven / @Bodhi - you're going to have to pay it anyway. It's not going to be reduced, it's not going to be stopped, you're going to pay come what may.

So you can fuck the beeb over because you've some rightwing stick up your arse and see it as an easy 'leftie' target, which plays into your beloved Murdoch's heart, and still pay your money. Or you can keep 5 live and the world service going - which gives you your footie coverage and pumps British propaganda for free down johnny foreigner's throat.

Either way, you're not getting a reduction in the money you pay...

What the fuck are you waffling on about now? What has class got to do with it? BBC output = shit, end.

Basically what you have taken from me not enjoying Mrs Browns Boys or whatever the fuck passes as comedy on the BBC these days is that its based on political leanings?

Wow. Actual head scratcher.

There is probably a reason they get paid less than the industry rate. They aren't very good at their jobs...

Agree, same in Ireland, I get RTE (shite) AND adverts for the same money as the UK licence. These idiots don't know they're born.

I am all for it if it keeps adverts at bay, fucking hate them with a vengeance. I pay for BBC, Amazon Prime, Sky but never watch anything "live" as I need to be able to watch it advert free or quickly skip the adverts.

Put it this way, would you be happy to give Netflix £5.99 a month if there was nothing on there you wanted to watch?

Now you're just being a knob. Most people work for the BBC for less money than pay TV because of the quality of the setup, not in spite of it. This comes down to the fact that you don't like the BBC's output, but news flash, you probably don't like most commercial TV output either, or Netflix or Sky. You seem to want some nirvana of a la carte pricing for only the stuff you want and nothing else; it doesn't work that way, and it can't work that way, because the mass market shite you don't like subsidises the more niche stuff you do like, and the actual public service stuff like news and documentaries that people flat out won't pay for at any price.

Actually yes, because while I only watch maybe 3-4 shows a year on Netflix, my family watch loads of stuff; apply that model to society at large and that's the very definition of public service TV.

Doesn't matter really. You're going to pay the tax anyway. At least the Beeb provides some services you do like / will watch.

You could throw that away if you like, but you'll still pay.

I think this is the post where you have officially jumped the shark - what the fuck does not thinking the BBC is worth £12 a month have to do with political leanings?

If politics were to come into it I'd say the license fee in 2015 was well worth it to see the look on Huw Jenkins' face when they announced the exit poll results after the GE tbh.

Because if comments are peppered with not wanting to pay "Islington wankers" (not you, Raven) that has a subtext all of its own.

I noticed that both you and Raven have not picked up on @DaGaffer saying effectively the same thing a few posts back and both of you are still studiously avoiding the fact that you're going to have to pay anyway.

Hey ho :)

Um, I did when I mentioned that I don't have an issue paying for the Infrastructure, but not the content as it's mostly arse dribble. Try to keep up there old chap.

And it's all very well saying "You'll pay anyway", however I'm not entirely sure why I should have to? Surely if people want to watch Call The Midwife:Eastenders Voice Edition then they can pay the subscription (I honestly doubt the BBC would lose too much funding) , then those who want to watch content from a different provider can do so.

Tis the beauty of choice after all.

But isn't that the same as me saying Why the fuck should I pay Council Tax for the local swimming pool, library etc when I never use any of that shit?

I pay 12 for BBC
50odd for sky.

I would prefer to just pay sky and not receive BBC. I have no choice though.

Others started wittering on about the tax aspect, which would be better spent on other things, like I said, decent internet infrastructure, subsidised internet access etc

Which is my point.

But Scouse and co are happy to be reamed by the BBC so they can churn out any old crap and still get the same money. In reality they should be expected to make more money from sales of programming to other networks, that way all the piles of steaming shit they produce would be replaced by stuff that people actually want to watch.

No, the point is that I suspect only a small minority believe the BBC churn out "any old crap". At least the crap is not infested with adverts, when they say something is on for 60 minutes it averages around 58, on commercial tv it goes down to 41-45 minutes because of crap adverts.

Yeh some of the stuff is shite, but for me the majority of stuff the BBC provides I actually do appreciate and I am not just talking Eastenders, The Voice, Pointless but the wealth of other services like News, Documentary, Apps, iPlayer, Radio.

I'd put it more in with the Tax Rebate you can get if you pay into a Private Pension.

The rebate is there to encourage people to save for a pension to ease the burden/pass the issue on the Government when you finally stop working surely?

The local tv in both NL and Swe is so bad it makes Call the Midwide look awesome. There is reality shite like Ullared (a big Walmart like shop in Swe) or Lyxfällan (people in debt) not to mention Swedish Hollywood Wives or american shite like honey fucking boo boo.... I crave British TV.... So i sunscribe to ComHem (like sky or Virgin).... Netflix / HBO and DFS... Not to mention ITunes.... I pay significantly higher taxes than most of you and you still whine about 12 quid a month.... Just stop you really haven't a clue!

Oh do piss off. If I think 12 for shit is a waste of money then I am perfectly entitled to that opinion.

I don't much care what you pay in Sweden, it has now bearing on the UK.
