So I have been reading about this guy Tom Crawford. It sounds like in 1988 he signed up for an Interest only Mortgage (he has shown the document on camera saying it is an Endowment Interest only) with an Endowment meant to pay off the rest of the mortgage. He then stopped paying the Endowment part after a couple of months, so carried on with an Interest only Mortgage for 25 years. Now he did pay more than enough on the Interest only side to pay of the Mortgage. But because it was interest only the bank decided to evict him after he refused / could not afford to buy the house now into his 60's. I do not want to get into the rights and wrongs of this kind of Mortgage, or the con that is a 25 year interest only Mortgage. But the part I found amazing is the support this guy managed to gather over Social Media, he had people fighting the police because they thought he was being evicted illegally. And 2 evictions were called off due to the amount of people who showed up to stop the Bailiffs and Police. In the end it took 150 riot cops and 50 bailiffs and an operation that cost in the 100s of thousands to evict this guy all because of Social Media. Looking back at it now it is clear this guy either just lied or has no clue about mortgages but the bank (legally), police, bailiffs and court did nothing wrong yet 400 people still showed up and risked arrest to help this guy. I liked the fact that given the information they had some of these people (ignoring the pricks that show up looking for a fight) would risk this for a total stranger. I was also slightly shocked at how easy these people were tricked into risking all this for a guy was was either intentionally or accidentally misleading them.

It has been in the news that endowments are rubbish. If he of his own free will dropped the endowment and only paid the interests then all those social media people are stupid.

Of course you are going to pay over the original price for the house if you pay interest only for 25 years. But that doesnt mean you own the house. Just that you serviced the debt.

I wish all those protesters and thugs got their names taken and had to pay the policing bill between them instead of the tax payer.

Get an interest only mortgage if you think the house price will out strip the interest and you want to sell before the end so you can pay it off. But in this case he had an endowment that you are supposed to pay into at the same time to cover the house price when bought but he cancelled it.

There was a time when the recommended way to buy your house (especially if you were middle class) was to have an interest-only mortgage and an endowment policy. If the return on the endowment policy is greater than the interest of the mortgage you will pay of your mortgage for less overall.

This was also in the days when mortgages were a lot less flexible and endowment policies gave a bit more flexibility. e.g. if you didn't want to pay as much one month as long as you covered the interest only mortgage part the bank were happy.

I got one pile of nonsense last night "Facebook are trying to get this image banned, show you don't agree" - it was a picture of a nativity scene. And of course I wanted to tell them to fuck off with their nonsense, but it just feeds the troll factory, so I didn't bother.

And to answer your question, no, of course we shouldn't celebrate him; irrespective of the rights and wrongs of "The War on Drugs" he was still a murderer, a kidnapper and a thief as well as a drug dealer.

Oh, and there may not be pictures of him waving money about but that's probably because there aren't many pictures of him full stop. He was more than happy to spend his money on Learjets.

Back at my parents place, driving a friend to the train and as she was late, i did a bad overtaking, it was only 20 km/h, but it was a narrow place and i should have waited behind the guy.
