or just read the manual when you buy the car so you know where the manual release button is, as mentioned in the article....

"Don't microwave a cat" needs to be an instruction, so anything else is pretty much out the window :p

Who the fuck knows you can be locked in, no sensible person would expect such a ridiculous state of affairs...the emergency release should be described on the dash next to the airbag messages...someone has died ffs...I hope the family sue for millions.
You try kicking out the window of a modern car, they are unbelievably tough to pass stringent crash protection rules.

That does sound pretty shocking on Corvette's part to be honest. It sounds like a known problem and rather than investigating/solving it (as in, preventing it from happening in the first place) they've put a workaround in as an quick fix.

Yeah, hot day, parked infront of restaurant, car stops working, no one helps(or notices), forgot phone in the restaurant.

If this is the only case, then it's an unfortunate series of events that lead to the death.

Yeah, sad that he died and unbelievable from the manufacturer but did nobody notice that there was an old man in need of urgent help? Outside of a restaurant?

We know precisely nothing about where he was parked, if it was down an alley or in a deserted car park behind the restaurant or etc etc etc so there's little point in going down that avenue.

Except we do from the numerous more informative reports.

It was a normal car park outside of a restaurant in the middle of the day. (the chevy has its bonnet up)

Hitting the horn might have helped. If he did that then merica indeed.

If the battery was unplugged then I presume the horn wouldn't work either.

The battery was flat...so nothing works, you are locked in.

Thinking about it, its the same on our car. There are no keyholes anywhere, not even for the ignition.

I might have a look to see if there is an emergency release somewhere now.

This is why owners should read the manual, to discover how their car works.

Okay.

What if I got locked in someone elses car and I didn't know that?

I don't understand why you can't just have the old fashioned handles in the doors.

My Dad's merc does and he has all the fancy shit.

Unless you were one of those middling to thick pupils you'd figure "they *can't* design a car without a release" and look, then find it...

So what exactly do you think should happen? Everyone getting into a car should complete a full written or verbal exam of the cars features with emphasis on all the safety aspects. Or, car manufacturers listing all safety features clearly on the dashboard. Possibly even, every car being fitted with a spring loaded center punch to smash windows easily. Nanny state gone mad IMO.

Most people would be able to get out of that situation by kicking in a window. Not actually that hard, I did once with my elbow after stupidly locking a door with the keys in the ignition and engine running. That was in the naughties and almost impossible to do now.

It's prettier. - and not that weird. My fuel thang's on the floor. Bonnet catch under the steering wheel. Rarely used emergency door open on the floor? Not that weird...

I think I'd be at risk of death in that situation. Sometimes I can't find the can opener even when it's in the right place in the drawer in front of me and I'm looking right at it. Finding an emergency release on an unfamiliar car (all cars are unfamiliar to me) is probably beyond me.

It is in the footwell. At your feet. If that's beyond you then wiping your arse is sometimes beyond you*!

Don't any of you ever buy a TVR then. I doubt you'd ever escape a Chimaera.

this tbh. it's a door. it's meant to be operable, and for that there is usually a generic device named a door handle. imo a door that doesn't have handles isn't a door any more. I'd say a no-handled door is about the same as a wall.
